In opposition to an essentialist conceptualization, the social construct of the human body in literature can be analyzed and described by means of effective methodologies that are based on Discourse Theory, Theory of Cultural Transmission and Ecology, System Theory, and Media Theory. In this perspective, the body is perceived as a complex arrangement of substantiation, substitution, and omission depending on demands, expectations, and prohibitions of the dominant discourse network. The term Body-Dialectics stands for the attempt to decipher – and for a moment freeze – the web of such discursive arrangements that constitute the fictitious notion of the body in the framework of a specific historic environment, here in the Age of Goethe.

Vision And Character written by Eike Kronshage and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-11-15 with Literary Criticism categories.

As readers, we develop an impression of characters and their settings in a novel based on the author’s description of their physical characteristics and surroundings. This process, known as physiognomy, can be seen throughout history including in the English Realist novels of the 19th and 20th centuries. Vision and Character: Physiognomics and the English Realist Novel offers a study into the physiognomics and aesthetics as presented by some of the best known authors in this genre, like Virginia Woolf, Joseph Conrad, Charles Dickens and Jane Austen. In this highly original approach to the issues of representation, visuality and aesthetics in the nineteenth-century realist novel, and even the question of literary interpretation, Eike Kronshage argues that physiognomics has enabled writers to access their characters’ inner lives without interfering in an authoritative way.

Modernism written by Ástráður Eysteinsson and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Art categories.

The two-volume work Modernism has been awarded the prestigious 2008 MSA Book Prize! Modernism has constituted one of the most prominent fields of literary studies for decades. While it was perhaps temporarily overshadowed by postmodernism, recent years have seen a resurgence of interest in modernism on both sides of the Atlantic. These volumes respond to a need for a collective and multifarious view of literary modernism in various genres, locations, and languages. Asking and responding to a wealth of theoretical, aesthetic, and historical questions, 65 scholars from several countries test the usefulness of the concept of modernism as they probe a variety of contexts, from individual texts to national literatures, from specific critical issues to broad cross-cultural concerns. While the chief emphasis of these volumes is on literary modernism, literature is seen as entering into diverse cultural and social contexts. These range from inter-art conjunctions to philosophical, environmental, urban, and political domains, including issues of race and space, gender and fashion, popular culture and trauma, science and exile, all of which have an urgent bearing on the poetics of modernity.

In "The Logic of Designing," the author unlocks the secrets of the practical designing process and sheds light on the underlying principles and interplay of the various qualities of information. Using an insightful research project set in fascinating Las Vegas, she delves deeply into the nature of visual communication. The book explores the importance of different degrees of abstraction to our perception of the world, drawing on empirical research conducted in Las Vegas. Focusing on visual communication, the authors emphasize that reality is not limited to visual entities or a single level of abstraction. Instead, they show how visual communication involves a dynamic interplay of informational qualities that shape our understanding of reality. In an innovative approach, the author explores both the tangible and intangible aspects of information in design. By deciphering how these qualities interact and merge, the book offers new insights into how design profoundly affects our perception and understanding of the world. The transparently presented design process allows for an in-depth analysis that specifically uncovers the informational quality of visually non-informative and non-tangible elements. Empowered by empirical evidence and enriched with theoretical frameworks, 'The Logic of Designing' defies conventional notions and elevates design as a distinct field of knowledge. Concrete examples and tangible revelations within the book provide readers with a deeper understanding of the transformative power of design. As the narrative unfolds, readers gain valuable insights into how design shapes our perception of reality, transcending surface appearances. Embark on a captivating journey as the author deciphers the logic and interplay of information qualities in the realm of design. 'The Logic of Designing' opens your eyes to the intricacies of visual communication, offering a fresh perspective on how we perceive and interact with the world around us. Whether you're a design enthusiast, researcher, or simply curious about the complexity of human perception, this thought-provoking book is a must-read. It uncovers not only the significance of different levels of abstraction but also enlightens readers about the true nature of visual communication.

Blake Lavater And Physiognomy written by Sibylle Erle and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-12-02 with Literary Criticism categories.

"William Blake never travelled to the continent, yet his creation myth is far more European than has ever been acknowledged. The painter Henry Fuseli introduced Blake to traditional European thinking, and Blake responded to late 18th century body-theory in his Urizen books (1794-95), which emerged from his professional work as a copy-engraver on Henry Hunter's translation of Johann Caspar Lavater's Essays on Physiognomy (1789-98). Lavater's work contains hundreds of portraits and their physiognomical readings. Blake, Fuseli, Joshua Reynolds and their contemporaries took a keen interest in the ideas behind physiognomy in their search for the right balance between good likeness and type in portraits. Blake, Lavater, and Physiognomy demonstrates how the problems occurring during the production of the Hunter translation resonate in Blake's treatment of the Genesis story. Blake takes us back to the creation of the human body, and interrogates the idea that 'God created man after his own likeness.' He introduces the 'Net of Religion', a device which presses the human form into material shape, giving it personality and identity. As Erle shows, Blake's startlingly original take on the creation myth is informed by Lavater's pursuit of physiognomy: the search for divine likeness, traced in the faces of their contemporary men."
