He seems to have entered upon his profession without serious thought. When I was young, he says, I was very idle, and my guardian asked me what I was going to do to earn my living. I think he gave me the selection of several unpleasant ways - all ways seemed unpleasant. I knew nothing about them, and so I said: Oh, very well, I'll be a solicitor, ' and I began to be a solicitor; but it appeared to me after a short time that I might not be so idle as I wished. And so I became one, and I can assure you that for several years - indeed, for many years - I realised the height of my ambition.
