Blum ist ein zeitgenössischer Philosoph der Moralphilosophie. Er unterrichtet als Dozent an der Universität Boston, Massachusetts. Hauptsächlich hat er Werke und Schriften über die Phänomenologie der Facetten von Moralität in heutigen Gesellschaftsstrukturen verfasst, wie beispielsweise "MORAL PERCEPTION AND PARTICULARITY", Cambridge University press, 1994. Im Folgenden wird das Kapitel "Freundschaft als moralisches Phänomen" aus seinem Buch FRIENDSHIP, ALTRUISM AND MORALITY" (London /Boston/Melbourne, Henley-on-Thames Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1980) untersucht. Auffällig an diesem Text ist, dass Blum zur Untermauerung seiner Thesen ein Frauenbeispiel nutzte, was im Gegensatz zur Tradition steht, denn von den meisten Philosophen wurden für die Darlegung von Freundschaft nur Männerbeispiele verwendet, da sie Freundschaften zwischen Frauen als unwichtig und für wissenschaftliche Zwecke irrelevant empfanden. Blum beschreibt das Vorhandene und nicht das Ideale in der Freundschaft, wie auch Aristoteles es schon getan hat. Er gilt unter anderem auch wegen der Verwendung plausibler Beispiele von Frauenfreundschaften, die sich mit der Erfahrung decken, als Vorreiter für die feministische Ethik. In dieser Arbeit werden seine Thesen zur Moralität von Freundschaft und seine Abgrenzungen, zum Beispiel zu Kant ́s Konzeption von Freundschaft und zu Kierkegaards Universalismus und seine Bezugnahme auf die traditionelle Konzeption bzw. Teile der Konzeption von Aristoteles aufgezeigt.

Friendship, Altruism, and Morality, originally published in 1980, gives an account of "altruistic emotions" (compassion, sympathy, concern) and friendship that brings out their moral value. Blum argues that moral theories centered on rationality, universal principle, obligation, and impersonality cannot capture this moral importance. This was one of the first books in contemporary moral philosophy to emphasize the moral significance of emotions, to deal with friendship as a moral phenomenon, and to challenge the rationalism of standard interpretations of Kant, although Blum’s "sentimentalism" owes more to Schopenhauer than to Hume. It was a forerunner to care ethics, and feminist ethics more generally; to virtue ethics; and to subsequent influential interpretations of Kant that attempted to room for altruistic emotion and friendship, and other forms of particularism and partialism. In addition, the work has been widely influential in religious studies, political theory, bioethics, and feminist ethics.

Contemporary civil libertarians claim that their works preserve a worthy American tradition of defending free-speech rights dating back to the framing of the First Amendment. Transforming Free Speech challenges the worthiness, and indeed the very existence of one uninterrupted libertarian tradition. Mark A. Graber asserts that in the past, broader political visions inspired libertarian interpretations of the First Amendment. In reexamining the philosophical and jurisprudential foundations of the defense of expression rights from the Civil War to the present, he exposes the monolithic free-speech tradition as a myth. Instead of one conception of the system of free expression, two emerge: the conservative libertarian tradition that dominated discourse from the Civil War until World War I, and the civil libertarian tradition that dominates later twentieth-century argument. The essence of the current perception of the American free-speech tradition derives from the writings of Zechariah Chafee, Jr. (1885-1957), the progressive jurist most responsible for the modern interpretation of the First Amendment. His interpretation, however, deliberately obscured earlier libertarian arguments linking liberty of speech with liberty of property. Moreover, Chafee stunted the development of a more radical interpretation of expression rights that would give citizens the resources and independence necessary for the effective exercise of free speech. Instead, Chafee maintained that the right to political and social commentary could be protected independent of material inequalities that might restrict access to the marketplace of ideas. His influence enfeebled expression rights in a world where their exercise depends increasingly on economic power. Untangling the libertarian legacy, Graber points out the disjunction in the libertarian tradition to show that free-speech rights, having once been transformed, can be transformed again. Well-conceived and original in perspective, Transforming Free Speech will interest political theorists, students of government, and anyone interested in the origins of the free-speech tradition in the United States.
