Rather than simply a record of proceedings (3rd International Conference on Functional Grammar, Amsterdam, June 1988), this volume contains revised and expanded papers from the conference and other papers inspired by the lively discussion there. The volume focuses on the nature of the structures assumed to underlie utterances in natural languages, in two respects. One area is the question of whether to expand the representations accepted in Functional Grammar (FG) in order to capture interpersonal functions, i.e., communication between speaker and hearer in a particular situation and context, to include, for example, aspect, tense, modality and illocutionary force. The second area concerns whether current underlying representation in FG is sufficiently abstract to be the format for the deepest level of human conceptual knowledge storage, as discussed by Simon Dik in a number of recent articles.

"Because of global warming, scientists predict that the majority of the world's coral reefs may be gone by the end of the century based on rapid declines in the past century. In fact, the amount of living coral on Caribbean reefs dropped by 80% in the last three decades of the 1900s. But there's hope. Researchers studying both living and fossilized corals are bringing together their work to better understand the past and present of coral reefs and applying that understanding to help reefs become more resilient into the future. In Reefs of Time, paleontologist Lisa Gardiner introduces readers to coral reefs through the lens of the fossilized limestone structures they've left behind. Gardiner argues that understanding the life cycles of reefs that existed in "shallow deep time"--that is, the era of the youngest fossils inhabited by creatures much like those of today's world but unaffected by human contact--can help us better grasp the unique challenges facing corals in the present. Using theories of national, transnational and world cinema, and genre theories and psychoanalysis as the basis of its argument, Japanese Horror Cinema and Deleuze argues that these understandings of Japanese horror films can be extended in new ways through the philosophy of Deleuze. In particular, the complexities and nuances of how films like Ju-On: The Grudge (2002), Audition (1999) and Kairo (2001) (and beyond) form dynamic, transformative global networks between industries, directors and audiences can be considered. Furthermore, understandings of how key horror tropes and motifs apply to these films (and others more broadly), such as the idea of the “monstrous-feminine”, can be transformed, allowing these models to become more flexible.
