Rather than simply a record of proceedings (3rd International Conference on Functional Grammar, Amsterdam, June 1988), this volume contains revised and expanded papers from the conference and other papers inspired by the lively discussion there. The volume focuses on the nature of the structures assumed to underlie utterances in natural languages, in two respects. One area is the question of whether to expand the representations accepted in Functional Grammar (FG) in order to capture interpersonal functions, i.e., communication between speaker and hearer in a particular situation and context, to include, for example, aspect, tense, modality and illocutionary force. The second area concerns whether current underlying representation in FG is sufficiently abstract to be the format for the deepest level of human conceptual knowledge storage, as discussed by Simon Dik in a number of recent articles.

These are the proceedings of an English Heritage national seminar which was organised to address growing concerns about the variable quality of architectural paint research currently being carried out. The book describes and explains its role in understanding and managing historic buildings. The contributions contained in this book are designed to promote the development of standards and guidelines for use by clients and consultants, helping to shape the development of this vital new discipline. It therefore contains edited transcripts of the ground breaking discussion sessions on the proposed English Heritage guidelines and other important issues. The statutory requirements relating to painted interiors of listed buildings is another very problematical issue which has been considered in detail. In addition, guidance is provided on commissioning paint research and the pitfalls to avoid. The book will be essential reading for paint researched, architects, surveyors, conservation officers and all practitioners involved in commissioning paint research for historic buildings.

"Because of global warming, scientists predict that the majority of the world's coral reefs may be gone by the end of the century based on rapid declines in the past century. In fact, the amount of living coral on Caribbean reefs dropped by 80% in the last three decades of the 1900s. But there's hope. Researchers studying both living and fossilized corals are bringing together their work to better understand the past and present of coral reefs and applying that understanding to help reefs become more resilient into the future. In Reefs of Time, paleontologist Lisa Gardiner introduces readers to coral reefs through the lens of the fossilized limestone structures they've left behind. Gardiner argues that understanding the life cycles of reefs that existed in "shallow deep time"--that is, the era of the youngest fossils inhabited by creatures much like those of today's world but unaffected by human contact--can help us better grasp the unique challenges facing corals in the present. As Gardiner shows, once we know what happened in the past and what's happening in the present, we can begin to solve the questions of the future: Do coral reefs have any chance of surviving climate change, ocean warming, pollution, and other problems of the Anthropocene? And if so, how can humans be part of the solution? The book begins with an introduction to fossilization and the singular way coral and other limestone-producing organisms interact with the ocean's geological cycles. After an exploration of ancient reefs and the field of paleoecology, Gardiner shifts to a discussion of present-day reefs and the deleterious effects of ocean warming and other stressors that impact coral's ability to bounce back from disruption. She then returns to the fossil record to explore ways coral has built up resilience in the past and discusses how scientists can use this knowledge to help coral become more resilient in the future. Throughout, Gardiner draws on her own research and experience studying living and dead corals, along with a synthesis of the latest conclusions from other scientists, to illuminate how unlocking the recent past can help us change the future"-- Provided by publisher.

Loss And Wonder At The World S End written by Laura A. Ogden and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-13 with Social Science categories.
In Loss and Wonder at the World's End, Laura A. Ogden brings together animals, people, and things—from beavers, stolen photographs, lichen, American explorers, and birdsong—to catalog the ways environmental change and colonial history are entangled in the Fuegian Archipelago of southernmost Chile and Argentina. Repeated algal blooms have closed fisheries in the archipelago. Glaciers are in retreat. Extractive industries such as commercial forestry, natural gas production, and salmon farming along with the introduction of nonnative species are rapidly transforming assemblages of life. Ogden archives forms of loss—including territory, language, sovereignty, and life itself—as well as forms of wonder, or moments when life continues to flourish even in the ruins of these devastations. Her account draws on long-term ethnographic research with settler and Indigenous communities; archival photographs; explorer journals; and experiments in natural history and performance studies. Loss and Wonder at the World's End frames environmental change as imperialism's shadow, a darkness cast over the earth in the wake of other losses.

Japanese Horror Cinema And Deleuze written by Rachel Elizabeth Barraclough and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-01-13 with Performing Arts categories.
Using theories of national, transnational and world cinema, and genre theories and psychoanalysis as the basis of its argument, Japanese Horror Cinema and Deleuze argues that these understandings of Japanese horror films can be extended in new ways through the philosophy of Deleuze. In particular, the complexities and nuances of how films like Ju-On: The Grudge (2002), Audition (1999) and Kairo (2001) (and beyond) form dynamic, transformative global networks between industries, directors and audiences can be considered. Furthermore, understandings of how key horror tropes and motifs apply to these films (and others more broadly), such as the idea of the “monstrous-feminine”, can be transformed, allowing these models to become more flexible.
