Roman Gardens: Villas of the Countryside is the first in a two-volume set; the second, Roman Gardens: Villas of the City, was published in 1998. In this volume, photographer Roberto Schezen, together with Italian art historian Marcello Fagiolo, explores the fantastic villas and great gardens located within a thirty-mile radius around Rome, in the region of Lazio. The wealthy and cultured cardinals and princes of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries built rural retreats with elaborate gardens that came to define the giardino all'italiana. In many cases they built directly on the ruins of the villas of ancient emperors. This area of villae tuscolanae, featured in the writings of Cicero and others, remains legendary today. The engaging text traces the history of the Roman garden -- its character drawn from the rich cultural mix of Mediterranean, Latin, and Etruscan heritages -- and the inseparable relationship of Renaissance and baroque villas and gardens to those of antiquity. Illustrated with 240 lush color photographs, this volume celebrates twelve gardens in the Roman countryside (many closed to the public and shown here for the first time), including the archetypal Hadrian's Villa, Villa d'Este at Tivoli and its famous waterworks, the spectacular Palazzo Farnese at Caprarola, and the legendary "villa of the monsters" of Vicino Orsini at Bomarzo. The gardens encompass the entire villa's grounds and include architectural treasures, hanging gardens, elaborate fountains and water games, statues, paintings, and frescoes. These remarkable sites portray the 'culture of the garden' -- the idea of architecture and garden conceived as one total work of art.

Creati da Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola a partire dal 1556, i giardini quadrati di Caprarola sono stati oscurati dalla fama di palazzo Farnese e per questo incredibilmente trascurati dalla storiografia artistica: la loro esplorazione ha costituito una vera e propria scoperta, rivelando opere quasi sconosciute. I risultati presentati in questo volume riaccendono una luce nuova sulle fasi di esecuzione, gli artefici e i complessi significati dei ninfei, la cui lettura è resa particolarmente difficile dallo stato di conservazionemolto compromesso: fotografie, rappresentazioni grafiche e ricostruzioni restituiscono un'immagine viva e articolata di queste opere e consentono finalmente di rileggere e reinterpretare con intelligenza critica il complesso organico di architettura e natura che Vignola crea per celebrare il suo grande mecenate Alessandro Farnese. A Caprarola convergono le esperienze romane di villa Madama, villa Giulia e del cortile del Belvedere attraverso il comune denominatore dei modelli classici, rivissuti con estrema vivezza grazie all'apporto di umanisti come Annibal Caro e di tecnici molto abili come Curzio Maccarone e Francesco da Tivoli. Accanto alle forti analogie con i ninfei di villa d'Este a Tivoli, emerge la grande originalità delle realizzazioni di Caprarola, il cui complesso tessuto simbolico si offre come perfetta sintesi della cultura di un'epoca e rende il territorio viterbese assolutamente unico. Francesca Romana Liserre (Trani 1972), architetto, è dottore di ricerca in Storia dell'Architettura e specialista in Restauro dei Monumenti. Uno dei suoi principali temi di ricerca sono i Giardini Storici in area tosco-laziale, con particolare attenzione alle problematiche conservative di grotte e ninfei.Ha pubblicato su "Palladio", Il viale delle Cento Fontane di villa d'Este aTivoli: immagine e ipotesi per il restauro (2003).Nel volume di Marcello Fagiolo Vignola. L'architettura dei principi (2007) ha redatto i saggi su La realizzazione dei giardini inferiori di palazzo Farnese a Caprarola, La Grotta dei Satiri e ha curato il Catalogo delle Opere dell'architetto bolognese. Oltre che di opere rinascimentali, si occupa di giardini del Novecento, con particolare attenzione alla committenza anglosassone in Toscana e, in particolare, agli interventi di Cecil Ross Pinsent, a partire dalla villa I Tatti a Settignano per Mary e Bernard Berenson (Giardini anglo-fiorentini. Il Rinascimento all'inglese di Cecil Pinsent, Firenze 2008). Ha collaborato con l'Istituto Superiore per la Conservazione e il Restauro, è incaricata di ricerca del Centro di Studi per la Cultura e l'Immagine di Roma e svolge attualmente incarichi di collaborazione e docenza presso la Facoltà di Architettura di Roma Valle Giulia.
