A3 & HIS ALGEBRA is the true story of a struggling young boy from Chicago's west side who grew to become a force in American mathematics. For nearly 50 years, A. A. Albert thrived at the University of Chicago, one of the world's top centers for algebra. His "pure research" in algebra found its way into modern computers, rocket guidance systems, cryptology, and quantum mechanics, the basic theory behind atomic energy calculations. This first-hand account of the life of a world-renowned American mathematician is written by Albert's daughter. Her memoir, which favors a general audience, offers a personal and revealing look at the multidimensional life of an academic who had a lasting impact on his profession. SOME QUOTATIONS FROM PROFESSOR ALBERT: "There are really few bad students of mathematics. There are, instead, many bad teachers and bad curricula..." "The difficulty of learning mathematics is increased by the fact that in so many high schools this very difficult subject is considered to be teachable by those whose major subject is language, botany, or even physical education." "It is still true that in a majority of American universities the way to find the Department of Mathematics is to ask for the location of the oldest and most decrepit building on campus." "The production of a single scientist of first magnitude will have a greater impact on our civilization than the production of fifty mediocre Ph.D.'s." "Freedom is having the time to do research...Even in mathematics there are 'fashions'. This doesn't mean that the researcher is controlled by them. Many go their own way, ignoring the fashionable. That's part of the strength of a great university."

One hot July day, on a return trip home from New Orleans, Trish Dunaway received a call from Mercer University police: "Call your mother." As the minutes raced by, she learned the tragic news: her ninety-three-year-old mother had been instantly killed in a traffic accident. Her mother's story is a remarkable one: growing up in the 1920s in the Charleston, South Carolina Orphan House, losing her husband to cancer as a young married woman, and growing into a much-loved and honored prayer warrior. Trish gave herself a year to journal her grief. Through prayer, the ministry of the saints, journaling and poetry, Scripture, and memories of her Low Country heritage, she learned to choose God's comfort He offered through a walk into His mercy and grace. She shares her journey during the year following her mother's death as she learns how God teaches us to listen for His comfort in the face of despair.

Growing up in Upstate New York during the 1940s and 1950s was idyllic in many ways, with wintertime sledding and summer days spent on the shores of Lake Ontario. But even though she was involved in school activities and had friends, Diane harbored a painful secret: her father was an alcoholic. Often out of work, he might explode with rage at the dinner table because someone chewed too loudly, or accuse Dianes mother of infidelity, or pass out naked, sprawled across his bed, within sight of anyone who came to the front door. Not surprisingly, Diane learned to fear, resent, and mistrust her father. Unfortunately, there are many stories like Dianes, in which families are traumatized by abuse. Hers could have ended there, but thanks to a loving God, it did not. What makes Dianes story different is that she learned about the power of forgiveness. In Choosing to Forgive she shares her insights into this most precious but sometimes mysterious gift from God. How do we forgive people when they have deeply wronged us? What if we dont want to? What does forgiveness look like in everyday life? Diane has asked these questions and others in her journey toward forgiving the man who caused her such pain. Intended for both those whose circumstances are similar to Dianes and those simply want to learn more about forgiveness, this moving memoir tells the story of how forgiveness freed her to have a rich and happy life.

Riding Fury Home written by Chana Wilson and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-04-03 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

In 1958, when Chana Wilson was seven, her mother attempted suicide, holding a rifle to her own head and pulling the trigger. The gun jammed and she was taken away to a mental hospital. On her return, Chana became the caretaker of her heavily medicated, suicidal mother. It would be many years before she learned the secret of her mother’s anguish: her love affair with another married woman, and the psychiatric treatment aimed at curing her of her lesbianism. Riding Fury Home spans forty years of the intense, complex relationship between Chana and her mother—the trauma of their early years together, the transformation and joy they found when they both came out in the 1970s, and the deep bond that grew between them. From the intolerance of the '50s to the exhilaration of the women’s movement of the '70s and beyond, the book traces the profound ways in which their two lives were impacted by the social landscape of their time. Exquisitely written and devastatingly honest, Riding Fury Home is a shattering account of one family’s struggle against homophobia and mental illness—and a powerful story of healing, forgiveness, and redemption.

A talented writer could craft a short paragraph about his first novel in such a way as to demand further attention. I'm not that good. However, Crystal Beach Sunset is set in an interesting place and time and the interplay among the four principal characters will have universal appeal. What's not to like about a self-proclaimed devout atheist who does charitable work in several area churches? The day-to-day narrative begins when Jim and Rebecca Thornton, corporate banker and English teacher, opt for a two-week vacation on the shores of Lake Erie across from Buffalo. They expect some quiet time away from the heat of Manhattan and not the four-week, life-changing adventure that ensues. But then, they did not imagine that they would spend so much time with their landlord, a middle-aged, self employed, non-tax paying eccentric and his live-in twenty-eight year old girlfriend, a part time stripper and part time exercise rider at the local racetrack. The story takes place in Fort Erie, Ontario and Buffalo, NewYork, its crossborder neighbor, during the late summer of 1989. It ends on Labor Day that year, the last day of operation of Crystal Beach, a popular amusement park on the lake. The four principal characters occupy a lakefront property one bay over, the fifty year old Jack Mahoney and Linda McCollum in the main house and the young couple from New York City in the rental cottage. A cancellation provides an offer of a free extension of their stay if they "assist with some projects." The characters connect by gender and prim is influenced by the bawdier side of life and proper by the unconventional. The area backdrop provides a second sharp contrast, current and historical, between the Canadian and American sides of the Niagara River.
