Ludwig Heinrich Edler von Mises, l'«Ultimo Cavaliere del Liberalismo», nacque il 29 settembre 1881 a Leopoli, nella regione della Galizia, che all'epoca era parte dell'Impero Austro-ungarico (oggi Lviv, Ucraina), e morì all'età di 92 anni a New York, USA. Si laureò e concluse il dottorato in Giurisprudenza all'Università di Vienna. Insegnò inizialmente presso l'Università di Vienna. Nel 1934 fu costretto a lasciare l'Austria e trovò rifugio a Ginevra, dove rimase per alcuni anni come professore al Graduate Institute of International Studies. Nel 1940, dopo intense pressioni dei nazisti, decise di trasferirsi negli Stati Uniti, dove divenne professore alla New York University (NYU) dal 1945 fino al 1969. Fu l'autore di più di venti libri, tra i quali i seguenti: Teoria della moneta e dei mezzi di circolazione (1912), Socialismo (1922), Problemi epistemologici dell'economia (1933), lo Stato onnipotente (1944), L'Azione umana (1949) e La mentalità anticapitalista (1956). Le Sei Lezioni raccolgono la trascrizione di una serie di lezioni tenute da Ludwig von Mises all'Università di Buenos Aires, nel 1959. Con il rigore logico, la chiarezza e il solido metodo che hanno accompagnato tutta la sua opera accademica, Ludwig von Mises analizza alcuni dei temi più rilevanti di quel periodo storico e che, incredibilmente, ancora oggi sembrano non essere stati adeguatamente compresi e discussi. In queste lezioni, il rinomato economista austriaco analizza il capitalismo, il socialismo, l'interventismo, l'inflazione, gli investimenti esteri e i complessi rapporti tra la politica e le idee. Questo libro, che presenta il pensiero misesiano in modo semplice e didattico, è una delle migliori introduzioni alla scienza politica e all'economia partendo dalle prospettive del liberalismo classico. Questo libro è un elogio della libertà di esplorare mondi possibili. Essere aperti al mondo significa trovarsi nella condizione di sperimentare costantemente una molteplicità infinita di incontri possibili con il mondo stesso e scoprire, al contempo, il valore inestimabile della sua incompletezza. Sono due le figure che fanno da guida lungo questo percorso alla scoperta del senso della possibilità: l’esploratore di connessioni e il coltivatore di memorie. Il primo va alla ricerca di verità e di validità e s’imbatte in un ventaglio di alternative, mentre il secondo ha lo sguardo rivolto al passato, repertorio sconfinato di possibilità. La tensione tra queste due figure spalanca una consapevolezza: l’utopia è un mondo sociale possibile, costruito con i materiali del mondo attuale. “I frammenti di un discorso utopico ci invitano a esplorare lo spazio delle possibilità, entro i confini che il mondo ci concede.” In un confronto serrato con i più grandi pensatori della filosofia occidentale, Veca dimostra che il senso della possibilità si nutre di incertezza e di incompletezza e si oppone a ogni dittatura del presente, tutelando invece lo spazio per gli esercizi dell’immaginazione, e dunque per la visione politica e per la libertà. Un saggio necessario per riconquistare il futuro senza arrendersi mai nella ricerca incessante della giustizia sociale.
