Questo studio, che vede la luce nel V centenario della morte di Filippino Lippi (1457-1504), nasce dalla volontà di proporre una lettura insolita degli affreschi della Cappella Carafa (1489-93). La cultura artistica fiorentina alla quale Filippino si è formato durante l'apprendistato nella bottega del Botticelli, la partecipazione al dibattito sorto intorno alla funzione della prospettiva - strumento primario attraverso il quale l'artista eleva l'arte a scienza - e il ruolo dell'architettura intesa come concretizzazione dello spazio pittorico e manifestazione della munificenza dello Stato come del singolo cittadino, costituiscono un riferimento costante nell'organizzazione strutturale, spaziale e decorativa degli affreschi di Filippino a S. Maria sopra Minerva. In quest'opera il fittizio si mescola all'architettura reale, la quale è posta alla base della simulazione dello spazio effimero, mentre la dissimulazione della struttura portante è attuata attraverso l'effetto pittorico della decorazione. L'architettura dipinta della cappella si manifesta nella varietà delle forme in essa impiegate e nella varietà dei materiali che in essa sono raccolti; è interpretata dall'artista come una lastra da impreziosire con intagli e colori e che gioca con l'apparato scultoreo ad essa applicato. Queste sono le condizioni dalle quali parte la qualificazione della Cappella realizzata dal Lippi per la munificenza del cardinale Oliviero Carafa, così descritta da Vasari: una cappella nella quale dipinse storie della vita di S. Tommaso d'Aquino et alcune poesie molto belle, che tutte furono da lui, il quale ebbe in questo sempre propizia la natura, ingegnosamente trovate. Attraverso la ricerca dei modelli architettonici, dei riferimenti alla trattatistica e, più in generale, al clima culturale, si è cercato di restituire un senso alle invenzioni bizzarre di Filippino. Maria Vitiello Santorelli dopo la laurea in Architettura presso l'Università degli Studi La Sapienza di Roma, ha conseguito il Diploma di Specializzazione in Restauro dei Monumenti e il Dottorato di ricerca in Conservazione dei Beni Architettonici nella stessa Università, dove attualmente svolge attività didattica e di ricerca. E' autrice di saggi e recensioni su riviste specializzate. Recentemente ha pubblicato: L'antica facciata di S. Maria del Fiore (1998); Autorità et acoutumance. La rivalutazione delle culture locali nella teoria di Claude Perrault (2000); I beni culturali ecclesiastici (2000); Sintassi architettonica longhiana. [Italiano]: La signoria feudale del Mezzogiorno e nel Mezzogiorno è un tema storiografico di lunga durata, che in anni recenti ha ripreso nuova linfa. Il ripensamento delle categorie interpretative del fenomeno signorile basso-medievale, una serie di approfondite analisi delle società rurali tardo-medievali e dei caratteri dei poteri feudali, le circostanziate ricostruzioni delle loro forme di amministrazione e di gestione, le indagini sulla semantica delle rappresentazioni e sul loro grado di pervasività hanno consentito il superamento di quel paradigma storiografico di una feudalità regnicola omogenea al proprio interno e monolitica nei suoi orientamenti. Inserendosi in questo dibattito, il volume propone un caso di studio: la signoria degli Orsini di Nola tra la Terra di Lavoro e il Principato Ultra (1293-1528). Attraverso l’esame di una varietà di fonti (documentarie, narrative, iconografiche e architettoniche), con particolare attenzione al secondo Quattrocento, l’Autore riflette sulle forme del radicamento del potere orsiniano, sui suoi rapporti con le élites della contea, sui processi di autorappresentazione. In tal modo egli offre un rilevante contributo allo studio dei signori e delle corti signorili nel Regno di Sicilia./[English]: The feudal lordship of Southern Italy and in Southern Italy is a long-lasting historiographic theme, which has taken on new life in recent years. The rethinking of the interpretative categories of the medieval lordship, a series of in-depth analyses of the late-medieval rural societies and the characteristics of the feudal powers, the detailed reconstructions of their forms of administration and management, the investigations into the semantics of representations have allowed the overcoming of that historiographic paradigm of a Southern baronial class which was internally homogeneous and monolithic in its orientations. Aiming to follow this path, this book puts a case study forth: the lordship of the Orsini, counts of Nola, between Terra di Lavoro and Principato Ultra (1293-1528). Using a wide variety of sources (documentary, literary, iconographic and architectural), the author reconstructs how the Orsini were able to entrench themselves within this territory, exposing their network of relationships with Nola’s most prominent families, and analysing the processes of their self-representation through artistic patronage.
