Nel 1905, spinto dall’amico editore Pierre Lafitte, pubblicò senza alcuna convinzione il racconto L’arresto di Arsène Lupin. Il successo immediato lo portò a continuare le avventure dello straordinario ladro gentiluomo, divenuto celeberrimo, con una incessante, felicissima produzione che durò fino al 1941, anno della sua morte. La sua casa nella località di Étretat è oggi divenuta il museo Le Clos Arsène Lupin. Che sorta di “ladro” è Arsène Lupin? “Ladro gentiluomo” è la definizione, coniata dall’autore stesso, dell’affascinante e irraggiungibile Lupin, amato dalle donne, ammirato dagli uomini, idolatrato dai giovani. Tale definizione, già presente nel titolo del primo volume del ciclo, Arsène Lupin, gentleman cambrioleur, divenne presto molto popolare e segnò la nascita di un mito cui il suo creatore dedicò la produzione raccolta in questo volume. L’affascinante Arsène è anche conosciuto come “il Robin Hood della Belle Époque”, e l’abbinamento è legittimo, tranne che per un particolare: Lupin non ha armi se non la propria intelligenza, perspicacia, intuizione.
