Du concept général de norme à celui de norme linguistique, du français parlé en Nouvelle-France aux grands enjeux linguistiques de la Révolution tranquille, de la qualité de la langue au français des médias, voilà quelques-unes des problématiques abordées à travers cet ouvrage divisé en trois chapitres centrés sur la norme du français québécois. Mais au-delà de l’exercice de synthèse, je propose avant tout de répondre aux questions suivantes : quels sont les locuteurs qui détiennent le bon usage québécois ? La norme du français parlé au Québec est-elle différente de celle des autres pays de la francophonie ? Et enfin, quels sont les grands traits linguistiques qui caractérisent le français québécois soutenu ? Pour ce faire, je présente une analyse sociolinguistique de 18 variables grammaticales réalisée à partir d’un corpus de français québécois soutenu, le corpus Le point. Cette étude offre ainsi un premier portrait du français socialement valorisé par les élites sociales et culturelles québécoises.

Qui n’a jamais entendu la règle française suivante : « le masculin l’emporte sur le féminin » ? Si les premiers grammairiens ont imposé leurs vues sur les siècles subséquents, leurs sœurs, quant à elles, se sont retrouvées invisibilisées et muettées. Dans ce petit traité pratique, Céline Labrosse prône avant tout une langue française sans sexisme qui met en avant l’essence universelle des êtres humains – peu importe leur identité et/ou leur genre – ainsi que l’esprit commun et global de toutes et chacun à célébrer dans l’harmonie plutôt que dans la dualité. Pour une langue sans sexisme ouvre une avenue prometteuse et inspirante pour la langue française de demain, celle que l’on utilise au quotidien.

Au Québec, en matière de langue, le choix d'un modèle de "bon usage" devant guider les locuteurs est l'objet d'un débat permanent. Deux camps s'opposent. D'un côté se trouvent les partisans de l'adoption d'une norme "endogène" (nationale), qu'ils désignent sous le nom de "français québécois standard". De l'autre se situent les défenseurs de l'utilisation d'un français international commun à tous les francophones, tel qu'il est décrit dans les dictionnaires de référence. Ils l'appellent le "français standard international". Les "endogénistes" affirment qu'il existe véritablement une norme propre au Québec, distincte de la norme internationale, et qu'il convient de la privilégier. Dans Le Français québécois entre réalité et idéologie. Un autre regard sur la langue , Lionel Meney déconstruit leur théorie. Pour la première fois, en s'appuyant sur une étude objective approfondie de la langue des journaux québécois, il montre à l'aide de nombreux exemples qu'il n'y a pas, sur le marché linguistique québécois, une seule norme, qui serait ce "français québécois standard", mais deux, un français québécois et un français international. Les deux coexistent et se font concurrence. Une conclusion s'impose : le "français standard international" fait autant partie du paysage linguistique québécois que le "français québécois standard". Vouloir privilégier le seul français québécois est un choix purement idéologique. Imposer le second contre le premier, c'est aller contre la tendance de fond du marché linguistique, qui montre les progrès constants du français international.

La notion de « bon usage » évoque immédiatement dans le contexte de la France les noms de Claude Favre de Vaugelas (1585-1650) et de Maurice Grevisse (1895-1980), deux colosses de la codification du français moderne qui date du xviie siècle. Ce concept, aujourd’hui chargé de connotations archaïques et élitistes, est souvent perçu comme un ensemble de prescriptions normatives correspondant à un certain modèle socioculturel. Le passage de I’« usage » au « bon usage » semble impliquer une transition d’un modèle descriptif à un modèle prescriptif, de la norme objective fondée sur l’usage statistiquement dominant à la norme prescriptive. Le but de ce volume est d’examiner, par différentes études de cas, si l’établissement d’un bon usage aboutit forcément à une réduction des variantes. Le volume constitue un premier essai pour déterminer dans quelle mesure le « bon usage » est un concept typiquement français et à quel point les mêmes idées, termes et modèles se retrouvent dans d’autres traditions nationales.

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz was an outstanding contributor to many fields of human knowledge. The historiography of philosophy has tagged him as a “rationalist”. But what does this exactly mean?
