La notion de « bon usage » évoque immédiatement dans le contexte de la France les noms de Claude Favre de Vaugelas (1585-1650) et de Maurice Grevisse (1895-1980), deux colosses de la codification du français moderne qui date du xviie siècle. Ce concept, aujourd’hui chargé de connotations archaïques et élitistes, est souvent perçu comme un ensemble de prescriptions normatives correspondant à un certain modèle socioculturel. Le passage de I’« usage » au « bon usage » semble impliquer une transition d’un modèle descriptif à un modèle prescriptif, de la norme objective fondée sur l’usage statistiquement dominant à la norme prescriptive. Le but de ce volume est d’examiner, par différentes études de cas, si l’établissement d’un bon usage aboutit forcément à une réduction des variantes. Le volume constitue un premier essai pour déterminer dans quelle mesure le « bon usage » est un concept typiquement français et à quel point les mêmes idées, termes et modèles se retrouvent dans d’autres traditions nationales.

Historical sociolinguistics has successfully challenged the traditional focus on standardization in linguistic historiography. Extensive research on newly uncovered textual resources has shown the widespread variation in the written language of the past that was previously hidden or neglected. The time has come to integrate both perspectives, and to reassess the importance of language norms, standardization and prescription on the basis of sound empirical studies of large corpora of texts. Automating Linguistics offers an in-depth study of the history of the mathematisation and automation of the sciences of language. In the wake of the first mathematisation of the 1930s, two waves followed: machine translation in the 1950s and the development of computational linguistics and natural language processing in the 1960s. These waves were pivotal given the work of large computerised corpora in the 1990s and the unprecedented technological development of computers and software.Early machine translation was devised as a war technology originating in the sciences of war, amidst the amalgamate of mathematics, physics, logics, neurosciences, acoustics, and emerging sciences such as cybernetics and information theory. Machine translation was intended to provide mass translations for strategic purposes during the Cold War. Linguistics, in turn, did not belong to the sciences of war, and played a minor role in the pioneering projects of machine translation.Comparing the two trends, the present book reveals how the sciences of language gradually integrated the technologies of computing and software, resulting in the second-wave mathematisation of the study of language, which may be called mathematisation-automation. The integration took on various shapes contingent upon cultural and linguistic traditions (USA, ex-USSR, Great Britain and France). By contrast, working with large corpora in the 1990s, though enabled by unprecedented development of computing and software, was primarily a continuation of traditional approaches in the sciences of language sciences, such as the study of spoken and written texts, lexicography, and statistical studies of vocabulary.

This edited collection presents papers relating to the state of the art in Perceptual Dialectology research. The authors take an international view of the field of Perceptual Dialectology, broadly defined, to assess the similarities and contrasts in non-linguists’ perceptions of the dialect landscape. This important contribution to the sociolinguistics of Asian languages breaks new ground in the study of language standards and standardization in two key ways: in its focus on Asia, with particular attention paid to China and its neighbours, and in the attention paid to multilingual contexts. Du concept général de norme à celui de norme linguistique, du français parlé en Nouvelle-France aux grands enjeux linguistiques de la Révolution tranquille, de la qualité de la langue au français des médias, voilà quelques-unes des problématiques abordées à travers cet ouvrage divisé en trois chapitres centrés sur la norme du français québécois.
