"En 1912, après plus d'un siècle de différends et alors que la France concentre sa flotte en Méditerranée, la Marine et la Guerre ne parviennent pas à s'entendre pour assurer la défense des côtes. La Grande Guerre, avec ses besoins en artillerie lourde récupérée sur les côtes et la menace sous-marine qui risque d'asphyxier l'Entente, conduit le Parlement à forcer les deux ministères à s'entendre : en 1917, la défense des côtes est confiée à la Marine. Après le traité de Washington (1922) et avec pour priorité la sécurité du bassin méditerranéen menacée par l'Italie présente en Libye et active en Tunisie, la Marine conçoit un programme de défense du littoral. Tirant les leçons des opérations des Dardanelles (1915), ce programme constitue l'un des quatre volets du Statut naval de 1923 présenté à la Chambre par le ministre Flaminius Raiberti. Entraîné par des parlementaires actifs, tels Boussenot, Chappedelaine, Goude ou de Kerguézec, le Parlement soutient la Marine en lui accordant les crédits requis et en la poussant à rationaliser la reconstruction de la défense de ses bases navales. Au début des années 1930, le programme de défense des côtes méditerranéennes est consolidé et son exécution bien entamée. Face à une Italie rivale, voire hostile, la priorité est donnée à la défense des bases de Toulon et Bizerte, armées des ouvrages d'artillerie les plus importants. Examines how the Channel Islands have been crucial to Britain's successful maritime superiority in the English Channel. The Channel Islands have played a key role in both naval warfare and Anglo-French diplomacy, but this has not always been highlighted sufficiently even though Britain and France were at war for most of the period 1689-1815. This book considers a wide range of maritime subjects where the role of the Channel Islands has been significant, such as intelligence gathering, piracy and privateering, and naval strategy and control of the Channel. It also examines topics in relation to the Channel Islands specifically, such as surveying and hydrography, fortifications, trade and Channel Islands societies. It charts changes over time, including the impact of technological changes, from the wars of Louis XIV and William III, through the many Anglo-French wars of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and includes planning for wars which were anticipated but avoided. Throughout the issues are discussed from the perspectives of Britain, France and the Channel Islands themselves, equal weight being given to all three perspectives. Andrew Lambert is Professor of War Studies at King's College, London and one of Britain's foremost maritime and naval historians. Colin Partridge is a former consultant to the States of Guernsey's 'Fortress Guernsey' programme for the restoration and interpretation of Guernsey's fortifications. Jean de Préneuf is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Lille and Head of the Research, Teaching and Studies Unit at the Historical Branch of the French Ministry of Defence at Vincennes.

In spite of the confusion and chaos of the June 6, 1944 mission, the Rangers succeeded in scaling the 100-foot cliffs, but the guns were nowhere to be found. Spreading out in all directions, a Ranger team managed to find and spike the guns at their hidden location south of Pointe-du-Hoc. For two days, this small force fought off repeated German attacks, until an American relief force finally arrived on 8 June, by which time more than half the Rangers were casualties.
