This microhistory of the Salvagos—an Istanbul family of Venetian interpreters and spies travelling the sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Mediterranean—is a remarkable feat of the historian’s craft of storytelling. With his father having been killed by secret order of Venice and his nephew to be publicly assassinated by Ottoman authorities, Genesino Salvago and his brothers started writing self-narratives. When crossing the borders of words and worlds, the Salvagos’ self-narratives helped navigate at times beneficial, other times unsettling entanglements of empire, family, and translation. The discovery of an autobiographical text with rich information on Southeastern Europe, edited here for the first time, is the starting point of this extraordinary microbiography of a family’s intense struggle for manoeuvring a changing world disrupted by competition, betrayal, and colonialism. This volume recovers the Venetian life stories of Ottoman subjects and the crucial role of translation in negotiating a shared but fragile Mediterranean. Stefan Hanß examines an interpreter’s translational practices of the self and recovers the wider Mediterranean significance of the early modern Balkan contact zone. Offering a novel conversation between translation studies, Mediterranean studies, and the history of life-writing, this volume argues that dragomans’ practices of translation, border-crossing, and mobility were key to their experiences and performances of the self. This book is an indispensable reading for the history of the early modern Mediterranean, self-narratives, Venice, the Ottoman Empire, and Southeastern Europe, as well as the history of translation. La scandalosa tresca se fosse un romanzo avrebbe molti numeri a suo favore: amore, passione, gelosia, vendetta, torbide macchinazioni, tragedia… Se fosse un saggio godrebbe di un’indiscussa autorevolezza, faticosamente conquistata attraverso un grandioso lavoro di ricerca, ricostruzioni e approfondimenti: una vera e propria caccia all’indizio talmente rocambolesca da offrire materiale per un volume a sé stante. Ma il libro di Gian Guido Zurli ed Edoardo Fregoso supera definizioni e categorie, posizionandosi in un genere che unisce il saggio al romanzo, superandoli entrambi. Il testo racconta una storia vera, quella di Sofia Pescatori, con grande scioltezza e fluidità, collocandola perfettamente nel suo contesto storico e arricchendola di particolari e dialoghi assolutamente realistici, che conferiscono alle pagine autenticità e vivacità. Il libro è impreziosito da foto di documenti originali e dalla ricostruzione in 3D del viso di Sofia, vero fiore all’occhiello per i due autori, se si considera che la vicenda si svolge a Parma intorno al 1840 e non esistevano ancora apparecchi in grado di scattare fotografie. Sofia ha un animo nero e non esiterà a compiere il peggiore dei gesti pur di vendicarsi e colpire la sua rivale in amore. La perfida donna sconterà la pena che metterà fine alla sua sconsiderata vita. Gian Guido Zurli, nato a Parma nel 1977, è regista e sceneggiatore. Si occupa soprattutto di montaggio video di contenuti per il web, video musicali e narrativi. Tra il 2014 e il 2017 ha realizzato una trilogia mystery-horror costituita dai film DOPPELGÄNGER, La Scatola Rossa – DOPPELGÄNGER Episodio 2 e Déjà-Vu: DOPPELGANGER Capitolo Finale; tutti distribuiti su Amazon Prime Video. Edoardo Fregoso, nato a Parma nel 1968 si è laureato in Giurisprudenza nell’Università della sua città. Abilitato avvocato, ha un Dottorato di Ricerca in Scienze Giuridiche, Storia del Diritto Medievale e Moderno, conseguito all’Università Statale di Milano. Attualmente svolge attività di ricerca presso l’Università Magna Graecia di Catanzaro.

The challenges of post-war recovery from social and political reform to architectural design In the months and years immediately following the First World War, the many (European) countries that had formed its battleground were confronted with daunting challenges. These challenges varied according to the countries' earlier role and degree of involvement in the war but were without exception enormous. The contributors to this book analyse how this was not only a matter of rebuilding ravaged cities and destroyed infrastructure, but also of repairing people’s damaged bodies and upended daily lives, and rethinking and reforming societal, economic and political structures. These processes took place against the backdrop of mass mourning and remembrance, political violence and economic crisis. At the same time, the post-war tabula rasa offered many opportunities for innovation in various areas of society, from social and political reform to architectural design. The wide scope of post-war recovery and revival is reflected in the different sections of this book: rebuild, remember, repair, and reform. It offers insights into post-war revival in Western European countries such as Belgium, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Portugal, Spain, and Italy, as well as into how their efforts were perceived outside of Europe, for instance in Argentina and the United States.
