Concentration et centralisation du capital, constitution d'un marché mondial et d'une division mondiale du travail et jusqu'à l'émergence de la puissance chinoise, tout cela est dans Marx. Les sociétés par actions, les fonds d'investissement, les hedge funds, le développement de la spéculation non pas sur les profits réels, mais sur les attentes de profits à venir, les «titres pourris» (junk bonds), bref toutes les tentatives par lesquelles le capital cherche à dépasser les barrières propres au rapport capitaliste, tout cela est exposé avec un certain luxe de détails dans Le Capital. Marx a eu raison, pour le pire. Mais sans cesse le capitalisme renaît de ses cendres. La révolution se fait attendre. Sommes-nous arrivés à la fin de l'histoire ? Les rébellions ne sont-elles plus que les feux de paille d'un horizon sans joie ? Sommes-nous condamnés à assister au yo-yo boursier comme des spectateurs impuissants ? L'auteur préfère ne pas s'y résoudre. Il montre comment, en soumettant la planète entière à sa loi, en transformant des milliards d'Indiens, de Chinois, d'Africains demain en prolétaires, en exploitant tous les champs possibles d'accumulation, le capitalisme prépare le moment où la logique de la plus-value s'effondrera bel et bien.
