In 1586, Federico Barocci delivered his Visitation of the Virgin and St. Elizabeth to the Chiesa Nuova in Rome. For the next quarter century, Barocci dominated the art scene in Rome; there was no other artist from whom it was harder to get work and no other artist charged such high prices. Having two important altarpieces in the Chiesa Nuova and two additional commissions discussed was an impressive feat for an artist living exclusively in Urbino. Why did the Oratorians monopolize Barocci’s talents in Rome and why does it seem that Barocci was their first choice when considering artists to decorate their church? What was it about Barocci’s art that appealed to Oratorian sensibilities and their vision of the artistic program for decoration of their church? This book examines the relationship between Barocci and the Congregation of the Oratory, arguing for a distinct physiognomy of Oratorian patronage and exposing the function the Oratorians expected of religious imagery in contrast to other groups of their time. While explaining Oratorian patronage, it thus deals with a thorny question in social science: how can a collective body have unified intentions and actions? The result is a contribution both to the history of Italian painting and to art historical methodology.

Più che i risultati di nuove ricerche, questo volume - prodotto nell'ambito del Programma di Ricerca di interesse Nazionale PRIN 2003, "L'architettura del classicismo tra Quattrocento e Cinquecento" da alcuni ricercatori facenti riferimento al Dipartimento PROCAM presso la Facoltà di Architettura di Ascoli Piceno, Università degli Studi di Camerino - rappresenta il tentativo di organizzare una sorta di 'stati generali' della situazione degli studi su quell'autentico labirinto di espressioni artistiche, che rientra nell'epiteto ormai comunemente adottato di Rinascimento delle Marche. Territori, più che regione-stato, conviventi e belligeranti fra loro e il nemico esterno; rappresentativi, in piccola scala, di quella sorta di coacervo politico, religioso e culturale che fu l'Italia di quel secolo XV che giustamente è stato definito il "secolo d'oro", verso la massima espressione del Classicismo dei primi venti anni del Cinquecento. Questo volume sulle Marche, dopo una premessa di Alfonso Gambardella, sulle problematiche di organizzare un tale complesso lavoro di riordino, e un saggio introduttivo di Francesco Quinterio su quella che in effetti fu l'espressione non di uno, ma di almeno "Tre rinascimenti per tante Signorie e molte Legazioni", fornisce nei tre saggi successivi di Ferruccio Canali, Marco Cocchieri e Virgilio Carmine Galati, gli altrettanti (ma sarebbero assai di più) caratteri di tale policentricità. Su tutti la presenza diretta e neanche troppo fugace di Leon Battista Alberti: quindi le conseguenze di una tensione culturale, i suoi riflessi in quella espressione dell'Umanesimo 'antiquario' in molti dei centri di quello che era stato in antico il Picenum dei Romani (Canali). Ancora un primato civile nella espressione architettonica, con la realizzazione assai diffusa di palazzi, case da signore, logge e magari ospedali, piuttosto che chiese; e questo fino a tutto il primo ventennio del Cinquecento (Cocchieri). Infine i risultati di una politica della difesa, ma anche dell'attacco diretto, in questa turbolenza diffusa, dove l'urgenza di un'aggiornata rete di fortificazioni si coniuga con l'orgoglio del prestigio di fronte al confinante che sia amico o nemico (Galati).
