[ITA] Il Regno di Sicilia, in età normanna e sveva, costituisce una realtà politico-amministrativa unitaria, ma assai multiforme nei suoi compositi tratti etnici, sociali e territoriali. Con tale varietà i sovrani dell’Italia meridionale seppero confrontarsi, dando compiuta e piena dimostrazione delle loro qualità politiche e dei loro interessi intellettuali, delineando precisi indirizzi culturali e di governo. Se l’Università di Napoli, fondata nel 1224, rappresentò la piena espressione della volontà e della lungimiranza politica di un grande re e imperatore come Federico II, anche l’attività amministrativa fu un formidabile strumento di regolamentazione istituzionale e ideologica del Regno. Questo è il campo di indagine del presente volume che, in particolare, pone l’attenzione sulle strategie organizzative tanto della cultura quanto della politica. Esse culminarono certamente nei decenni dominati dall’eccezionale figura di Federico II, ma furono predisposte dai suoi immediati predecessori normanni e – proseguite compiutamente dai suoi figli Corrado e Manfredi – non furono del tutto scardinate neanche dai sovrani della dinastia angioina. [ENG] The Kingdom of Sicily, in the Norman and Swabian age, was a unitary political-administrative entity, but very multiform in its composite ethnic, social and territorial features. The Kings of southern Italy were able to deal with this variety: by giving a complete demonstration of their political qualities and intellectual interests, they outlined precise cultural and governmental guidelines. The University of Naples, founded in 1224, represented the full expression of the will and political farsightedness of a great king and emperor like Frederick II, but also the administrative activity was a formidable instrument of institutional and ideological regulation of the Kingdom. This is the field of investigation of this volume which focuses, in particular, on the organizational strategies of both culture and politics. They certainly culminated in the decades dominated by the exceptional figure of Frederick II, but were prepared by his immediate Norman predecessors and – fully continued by his sons Conrad and Manfred – they were not completely unhinged even by the rulers of the Angevin dynasty.

Nell’epistolario di Gregorio Magno Triocala compare tra le 13 diocesi presenti in Sicilia nel VI secolo, ma questa sede episcopale avrà vita breve perché fu abolita nella riorganizzazione territoriale della Chiesa siciliana voluta dai Normanni. Eppure Triocala si annovera tra le “diocesi rurali” che nell’Italia centro meridionale si distinguevano da quelle urbane per essere stanziate in agglomerati secondari privi di autonomia amministrativa, quale si ritiene possa essere stato in età tardoantica e bizantina l’insediamento di contrada Sant’Anna/Caltabellotta (Ag). Presents us with a comprehensive point of departure for the study of artistic developments in the Late Middle Ages, from the Norman Conquest at the turn of the twelfth century to the coming of the Knights in 1530. This book shows us that Late Medieval Malta was not an artistic desert, that patronage in Mdina was surprisingly well-informed, and that the Renaissance reached Malta before the coming of the Knights. Architecture, however, lagged behind, and the stylistic and technical innovations reflected the conservatism of an insular society. Through the art and architecture of that period, Professor Buhagiar outlines the Christianization and Latinization process that moved the islands away from a Muslim and North African bias, to a South European sphere of influence. The author's many years of meticulous research and academic activity have resulted in an excellently presented book that can be enjoyed by both the academic and the general reader. Mario Buhagiar is Professor of History of Art and Head of the History of Art Programme at the University of Malta, which he was responsible for establishing in 1988. The author is also responsible for the Late Roman and Byzantine Catacombs and Related Burial Places in the Maltese Islands, and The Iconography of the Maltese Islands 1400-1900: Painting, as well as numerous articles in various journals, both local and foreign.
