The Club des Hashischins ("Club of the Hashish-Eaters”), was a Parisian literary group dedicated to the exploration of drug-induced altered states of consciousness, principally through the use of hashish, a concentrated form of cannabis resin. Notable members of the club, which was active from 1844 to 1849, included Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, Charles Baudelaire, Gerard de Nerval, Honoré de Balzac, and Théophile Gautier, all dedicated to experimenting with drugs and recording drug-induced visions. Whilst Baudelaire notably produced his treatise "The Poem Of Hashish” based on his experiences at the club, the most notable record of the group's activities and experiences under the influence of hashish remains Gautier's "Le Club des Hachichin”, first published in the Revue des Deux Mondes in February 1846. This text also includes a section on the original hashishin, the assassins who served the Old Man of the Mountain, a figure later identified by William S. Burroughs as Hassan i Sabbah. Transmutation and insanity loom over Gautier as he explores a hypnagogic inner world of monstrous distortions and shadows, on a trip into the revelries of Walpurgisnacht. The result is an enduring masterpiece of drug literature.

Il convient ainsi de revenir aux sources de connaissance en la matière afin d’établir les faits le concernant, et de déconstruire le mythe qui continue de l’entourer.

This long-form narrative poem is the first published work of Australian poet Thucydides Hilocometoot Chalm."Le Club des Hashischins" originally was the title of an article written by Pierre Jules Théophile Gautier, a French poet, dramatist, novelist, journalist, and art and literary critic who lived from 1811 to 1872. Gautier's article presents a first-person narrative account of the supposed experiences of the author (as protagonist) at of one of the meetings of Le Club des Hashischins, a club that met regularly in Paris during the 1840s. The club's name references its central purpose: the creative exploration of shared, hashish-induced experiences in a moderated group setting.Chalm intended his Expressive Transliteration first to be as faithful as possible to Gautier's narrative to ensure the poem told the same story that Gautier did. Chalm's second goal was to create a poem written in a meter that has a specific place in English literature, and through that vehicle, give a new voice to the English-language translations of Gautier's article Chalm relied on in writing this work.
