Les collèges classiques québécois étaient les héritiers d’un modèle pédagogique né à la Renaissance qui s’imposa partout en Europe, voire au-delà. Leur dessein était de former les garçons issus de milieux favorisés à l’humanisme chrétien. Du tournant du XIXe siècle aux premières décennies du XXe siècle, le territoire québécois se couvre littéralement de collèges. Ceux-ci jouissent d’un grand prestige jusqu’à la Révolution tranquille. Il y aura bientôt cinquante ans que les portes des collèges classiques se sont refermées pour ne plus s’ouvrir, mettant ainsi fin à plus de 300 ans d’histoire. Que reste-t-il aujourd’hui de ces vénérables maisonsqui formaient «l’honnête homme» et préparaient la relève du clergé catholique canadien-français? Le collège classique semble encorebien vivant dans la mémoire collective. Certains en sont nostalgiques. D’autres s’inquiètent de voir resurgir les principes d’une éducation jugée désuète, élitiste et sexiste. Par-delà les mémoires contrastées, le présent ouvrage propose de rouvrir les portes de ces collèges et de jeter un regard renouvelé sur une institution fondamentale dans l’histoire du Québec. Les différentes contributions qui composent l’ouvrage cherchent à revisiter la représentation monolithique du collège classique qui a cours encore. Elles examinent l’institution en tant que pépinière d’hommes, disséminant tant bien que mal un modèle de masculinité et une éducation sentimentale qui n’ose dire son nom. Présentant, tour à tour, les personnages qui forment ce milieu de vie singulier, les auteurs s’intéressent également à l’image que le collège classique a donnée de lui-même au cours de son histoire ainsi qu’à l’empreinte profonde qu’il a laissée dans la culture québécoise.

This perceptive intellectual history explores the role of manhood in French Canadian culture and nationalism. In the late nineteenth century, Quebec was still an agrarian society and masculinity was rooted in the land and the family and informed by Catholic principles of piety and self-restraint. As the industrial era took hold, a new model of manhood was forged, built on the values of secularism and individualism. Vacante’s analysis reveals how French Canadian intellectuals defined masculinity in response to imperialist English Canadian ideals. This “national manhood” enabled French Canadian men to participate in a modern, industrial economy while asserting their cultural authority.
