Born in Imperia in 1945, Giuseppe Conte is one of the most important and powerful voices in Italian literature today. A talented and versatile writer, he has published numerous books of poetry, novels, criticism, essays, and plays. He has received major literary prizes (including the Premio Montale) and has translated into Italian the works of Shelley, D.H. Lawrence and Walt Whitman. He has traveled extensively, has visited the United States to present his poetry, and now lives in Imperia, Italy, and in Nice, France. The Ocean and the Boy, Conte's first full-length book of poetry, is written in an intensely personal style, fusing myth and everyday reality. In this dual-language edition, the first English translation of a complete poetry book by Conte, the editor-translator, Italian-born poet Laura Stortoni, has included a translator's note, biographical and bibliographical data, endnotes and an introduction by Italo Calvino.

History written by Elsa Morante and has been published by Steerforth this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-02-24 with Fiction categories.

History was written nearly thirty years after Elsa Morante and Alberto Moravia spent a year in hiding among remote farming villages in the mountains south of Rome. There she witnessed the full impact of the war and first formed the ambition to write an account of what history - the great political events driven by men of power, wealth, and ambition - does when it reaches the realm of ordinary people struggling for life and bread. The central character in this powerful and unforgiving novel is Ida Mancuso, a schoolteacher whose husband has died and whose feckless teenage son treats the war as his playground. A German soldier on his way to North Africa rapes her, falls in love with her, and leaves her pregnant with a boy whose survival becomes Ida's passion. Around these two other characters come and go, each caught up by the war which is like a river in flood. We catch glimpses of bombing raids, street crimes, a cattle car from which human cries emerge, an Italian soldier succumbing to frostbite on the Russian front, the dumb endurance of peasants who have lived their whole lives with nothing and now must get by with less than nothing.

Translated by E. M. Macierowski Originally published in French, de Lubac's four-volume study of the history of exegesis and theology is one of the most significant works of biblical studies to appear in modern times. Still as relevant and luminous as when it first appeared, the series offers a key resource for the renewal of biblical interpretation along the lines suggested by the Second Vatican Council in Dei Verbum. This second volume, now available for the first time in English, will fuel the currently growing interest in the history and Christian meaning of exegesis.

The Imperative Of Responsibility written by Hans Jonas and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1984 with Philosophy categories.

Hans Jonas here rethinks the foundations of ethics in light of the awesome transformations wrought by modern technology: the threat of nuclear war, ecological ravage, genetic engineering, and the like. Though informed by a deep reverence for human life, Jonas's ethics is grounded not in religion but in metaphysics, in a secular doctrine that makes explicit man's duties toward himself, his posterity, and the environment. Jonas offers an assessment of practical goals under present circumstances, ending with a critique of modern utopianism.

Called by Plutarch "the oldest and greatest of Alexander's successors," Antigonos the One-Eyed (382-301 BC) was the dominant figure during the first half of the Diadoch period, ruling most of the Asian territory conquered by the Macedonians during his final twenty years. Billows provides the first detailed study of this great general and administrator, establishing him as a key contributor to the Hellenistic monarchy and state. After a successful career under Philip and Alexander, Antigonos rose to power over the Asian portion of Alexander's conquests. Embittered by the persistent hostility of those who controlled the European and Egyptian parts of the empire, he tried to eliminate these opponents, an ambition which led to his final defeat in 301. In a corrective to the standard explanations of his aims, Billows shows that Antigonos was scarcely influenced by Alexander, seeking to rule West Asia and the Aegean, rather than the whole of Alexander's Empire.
