Le Coran regroupe les paroles de Dieu qui auraient ete revelees au prophete et messager de l'islam Mahomet (, Mu ammad) par l'archange Gabriel ( ). Cette revelation s'etend sur une periode de vingt-trois ans. Le Coran est parfois appele simplement al-kitab (le livre) ou adh-dhikr (le rappel). Il constitue une des deux parts de la revelation a Mahomet, l'autre part etant constituee des hadiths prophetiques. Les musulmans le considerent comme une manifestation d'un attribut divin, le kalam, qui represente la capacite de Dieu (Allah en langue arabe) a transmettre a ses prophetes certaines informations relatives au bien et au mal, a la vie et a la mort, au paradis et a l'enfer, ainsi qu'aux lois fixant les limites entre le licite et l'illicite. En ce sens, il est, pour les musulmans, l'expression increee de cet attribut d'Allah adressee a l'intention de toute l'humanite, c'est-a-dire detenteur d'une vocation universelle, tout comme Jesus-Christ qui est considere comme le Logos (le Verbe, la Parole de Dieu) dans les Evangiles. The codex Parisino-petropolitanus is one of the earliest witnesses of the handwritten transmission of the Qurʾanic text which has survived to this day. The various fragments which were part of the original manuscript are scattered among various collections; once put together, they provide a unique picture of the state of the text during the 7th century (orthography and textual peculiarities) and of the circumstances in which the canonical version as we know it today took shape physically. The present study, first of its kind, paves the way for a more accurate understanding of the beginning of Islam, based on a significant document, and of the evolution of the Qurʾan during that period. Le codex Parisino-petropolitanus est l'un des plus anciens témoins de la transmission manuscrite du texte du Coran qui aient été conservés. Ses différents fragments sont dispersés entre plusieurs collections; une fois mis ensemble, ils donnent un aperçu unique sur l'état du texte au 7e siècle (orthographe et particularités textuelles) et sur les conditions dans lesquelles s'est organisée matériellement la constitution de la version canonique telle que nous la connaissons. Cette étude, première de son genre, ouvre la voie à une compréhension plus fine, appuyée sur un document significatif, des premiers temps de l'islam et de l'évolution du Coran au cours de cette période.

Islam has always had ambivalent relations with Judaism and Christianity, as also with Jews and Christians. The awkwardness of their character has been accentuated by the creation and perpetuation, on all sides, of partial and ill-intentioned images during the middle ages and by political developments in the modern period. Since the beginning of serious modern study of Islam in the west, these relations have found an important place in scholars' interest, partly because many of those in the west who have studied Islam have been Jews, with a natural attraction to an interest in those topics which affected Jews and other minorities in the Islamic environment. In this volume, we have tried to assemble a collection of papers which reflect something of the diversity of the problems offered by this range of relations.
