. Le corporatisme français est à nouveau accusé d’impotence, de gaspillage, on le traite de tue-la-croissance, d’ennemi du pouvoir d’achat, de somnifère criminogène. Cette vindicte le laisse froid, comme d’habitude au cours de sa longue vie. Qu’il soit loué, vilipendé ou simplement négligé, « notre » corporatisme n’a cessé d’affirmer une très belle et invulnérable santé. Dès sa naissance, sa fonction est claire : assurer l’ordre social à l’intérieur d’un espace géographique, concilier les intérêts individuels dont le contenu est indissociable de l’exercice d’un métier, et un intérêt collectif dont l’assurance est confiée au pouvoir politique. De sa naissance moyenâgeuse à la fin de son adolescence, il vit à l’ombre d’une monarchie dont il constitue le socle économique et social. Le corporatisme institue les métiers, lieux des solidarités, mais aussi des affrontements, pour interlocuteurs permanents d’un pouvoir politique chargé de pallier leurs carences éventuelles, d’arbitrer leurs conflits et d’assurer les meilleures conditions à la réalisation de leurs projets. Le destin du capitalisme mondial triomphant est tout à la fois l’industrialisation généralisée, encore plus l’informatisation, l’inévitable ploutocratie que porte en elle la prolifération de fortunes considérables, l’exclusion aussi, bien sûr, mais plus encore le corporatisme, indispensable à une stabilité sociale qui dépend de la classe moyenne, de cette immense armée d’employé(e)s adonnés à des métiers de plus en plus spécialisés et, pour certains, imprévisibles dans un futur plus ou moins éloigné. Le corporatisme n’a jamais été ni suprême, ni supérieur, et il ne le sera jamais. Il lui suffira d’être le stade ultime du capitalisme triomphant dont il fut le prolégomène avant l’industrialisation, et dont il sera l’héritier une fois apaisée la violence nécessaire à toute création, fût-elle de valeur. Le capitalisme est condamné à n’être qu’une transition, d’autant moins durable que son succès sera général et rapide. Après tout, le profit intelligent ne devient-il pas rente ? Et le progrès technique, né du génie de quelques-uns, incorporé et propagé à l’ensemble des peuples de la planète, n’a-t-il pas pour raison essentielle, voire unique, de démocratiser le sort enviable des rentiers, actifs et inactifs, assurés de la stabilité de leur condition ?
