This book required combing through over 16,160 pages of archives, for the period from 1892 to 1945 alone! Covering so many important events (creation of the newspaper, Federation, diplomatic and economic relationships between our two countries, the Great War, the roaring twenties and its wave of technological innovation, as well as the Second World War) in only 240 pages was not an easy feat. This book of course needs to be read as a collection of archives conveying how news was communicated to the French community in Australia, not simply as a historical account. This publication is part of the vision to protect the collective memory of our community.Le Courrier Australien was created in Australia on 30th April. This weekly, then monthly newspaper, has always enjoyed the unconditional support of institutions, universities, grandes écoles and leading figures. In 1892, under the auspices of the Consul General of France at the time, some noteworthy Frenchmen purchased the newspaper which quickly became the publication of the Chamber of Commerce and the Alliance Française committee. Le Courrier Australien has a rich history. Undoubtedly one of the most important moments was in 1940 when the newspaper broke ties with the Vichy government to manifest its support for Charles de Gaulle's movement and in so doing, became the symbol of the resistance and of freedom in the Pacific.Throughout its 127 year existence, part of Le Courrier Australien's DNA has been the link that unites francophones and francophiles across the vast Australian territory. It is a testament to the history of this French presence in Australia and is in many ways the voice of the exceptional friendship that exists between France and Australia!

Both Britain and the United States have had a long history of harbouring foreign political exiles, who often set up periodicals which significantly contributed to community-building and political debates. However, this varied and complex journalism has received little attention to date, particularly regarding the languages in which it was produced. This wide-ranging edited volume brings together for the first time interdisciplinary case studies of the exile foreign-language press (in French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Flemish, Polish, among other languages) across Britain and the US, establishing a useful comparative framework to explore how periodicals tackled key political, linguistic and literary issues from the 19th century to the present day. Building on the existing literature on the exile foreign-language press in the United States and developing the study of this phenomenon in the British context, Immigration and Exile Foreign-Language Press in the UK and in the US offers fresh perspectives into how these marginalised periodicals influenced the political, economic and social contexts that brought them into existence. This is a major contribution to the burgeoning field of transnational periodicals and will be of interest to anyone studying the history of the Anglo-American press, the history of immigration and cultural history.

The application of digital technologies to historical newspapers have changed the research landscape historians were used to. An Eldorado? Despite undeniable advantages, the new digital affordance of historical newspapers also transforms research practices and confronts historians with new challenges. Drawing on a growing community of practices, the impresso project invited scholars experienced with digitised newspaper collections with the aim of encouraging a discussion on heuristics, source criticism and interpretation of digitized newspapers. This volume provides a snapshot of current research on the subject and offers three perspectives: how digitisation is transforming access to and exploration of historical newspaper collections; how automatic content processing allows for the creation of new layers of information; and, finally, what analyses this enhanced material opens up. ‘impresso - Media Monitoring of the Past’ is an interdisciplinary research project that applies text mining tools to digitised historical newspapers and integrates the resulting data into historical research workflows by means of a newly developed user interface. The question of how best to adapt text mining tools and their use by humanities researchers is at the heart of the impresso enterprise.

Jean-Paul Delamotte A.M. (1931-2019) was a French writer and film producer who visited Australia in 1974, and promptly engaged with translating and promoting Australian culture through its films and books. This book celebrating his life, is a mosaic of memories that cover his zeal for a reciprocity between France and Australia, the creation of the Association Culturelle Franco-Australienne with his wife Monique in Paris, and their total immersion and engagement in aiding visiting Australian writers, filmmakers, artists, musicians, academics and students. He claimed: 'Love of one's country coupled with love of one's chosen and adopted culture is a seductive and rewarding course to follow' (Reciprocity, 20). From his early days as a lecturer in the French Department the University of Newcastle he tapped into the strength of Australia's new film-makers, translating Peter Weir's Picnic at Hanging Rock and utilising his links in France to get the film to French audiences. An early friendship with Frank Moorhouse enabled Frank to live and work in France to complete his Grand Days trilogy and find French publishers through Jean-Paul's translation. When Gough Whitlam was appointed Ambassador to UNESCO in Paris, the Whitlams found a firm friendship with the Delamottes, and backed the evolution of A.C.F.A. As Gough exclaimed: "Comrade, let us ... create a "little window" in Paris for Australia ... as you both have.."

The Fin De Si Cle Imagination In Australia 1890 1914 written by Mark Hearn and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-07-14 with History categories.

This book explores the fin de siècle, an era of powerful global movements and turbulent transition, in Australia and beyond through a series of biographical microhistories. From the first wave feminist Rose Summerfield and the working class radical John Dwyer, to the indigenous rights advocate David Unaipon and the poet Christopher Brennan, Hearn traces the transnational identities, philosophies, ideas and cultures that characterised this era. Examining the struggles and aspirations of fin de siècle lives; respect for the rights of women and indigenous peoples, the injustices and hardship inflicted on working men and women, and the ways in which they imagined a better world, this book examines the transformation and renewal brought about by fin de siècle ideas. It examines the distinctive characteristics of this 'great acceleration' of economic, technological and cultural forces that swept the globe at the turn of the 19th century both within an Australian context and on the world stage. Asserting that the fin de siècle was significant for the making of modern Australia, and demonstrating the impact Australian fin de siècle lives had on the transnational and global movements of the era, Mark Hearn traces the turbulent nature of the fin de siècle imagination in Australia, and its response to these dynamic forces.

This edited collection invites the reader to enter the diverse worlds of Australia’s migrant and minority communities through the latest research on the contemporary printed press, spanning the mid-nineteenth century to our current day. With a focus on the rare, radical and foreign-language print culture of multiple and frequently concurrent minority groups’ newspaper ventures, this volume has two overarching aims: firstly to demonstrate how the local experiences and narratives of such communities are always forged and negotiated within a context of globalising forces – the global within the local; and secondly to enrich an understanding of the complexity of Australian ‘voices’ through this medium not only as a means for appreciating how the cultural heritage of such communities were sustained, but also for exploring their contributions to the wider society.

While Harry Seidler is one of Australia’s most famous architects, little is known of his European-born contemporaries. The Other Moderns uncovers the work of Sydney’s forgotten émigré architects, interior designers, and furniture makers working from the 1930s to 1960s, and reveals their groundbreaking impact on modernist design. Highlighting the direct connections between Sydney and the European design centres of Vienna, Berlin, and Budapest, the book provides a new understanding of modernism. Profiling the work of architects like Henry Epstein and Hugo Stossel, along with Gerstl Furniture, The Other Moderns tells the story of the network of architects, designers, property developers, retailers, and photographers working together to bring a distinctly European style to mid-century Australia. Richly illustrated with rare photography, including stunning images from Austrian-born photographer Margaret Michaelis, and furniture from the collection of Hotel Hotel Canberra, the book explores the work of this unacknowledged group of style makers for the first time.
