Entre la Prusse de Frédéric II ou de Bismarck et l'Autriche de Marie-Thérèse ou de François-Joseph, s'étendait jadis un territoire, la Saxe électorale, devenue royaume de Saxe. Synonyme de porcelaine, d'une porcelaine décorée des aimables bergeries du XVIIIe siècle français, la Saxe a été durant deux siècles une Allemagne virtuelle. Proche de la Bohême et de l'Italie, associée à la Pologne par une union qui dura plus de soixante ans, devenue grâce à des technologies souvent importées d'Angleterre un des moteurs de l'industrialisation allemande, toujours à l'écoute des révolutions parisiennes, mariant jusque dans l'architecture de Dresde le luthéranisme de stricte observance et le catholicisme italien, la Saxe a fondé son identité sur les métissages. Les foires de Leipzig où se rencontrent des soyeux lyonnais, des artisans italiens, des pelletiers judéo-polonais et des négociants balkaniques, la foire du livre, où s'affirme une littérature allemande et où se décident publications et traductions, sont avec la galerie de Dresde et le monument de la Bataille des nations (1813) les signes d'une perméabilité culturelle assumée ou parfois refoulée. La philosophie et les sciences sociales à l'Université de Leipzig tenteront de penser cette universalité singulière qui définit l'originalité allemande comme un lieu d'échanges.

The project of global art history calls for balanced treatment of artifacts and a unified approach. This volume emphasizes questions of transcultural encounters and exchanges as circulations. It presents a strategy that highlights the processes and connections among cultures, and also responds to the dynamics at work in the current globalized art world. The editors’ introduction provides an account of the historical background to this approach to global art history, stresses the inseparable bond of theory and practice, and suggests a revaluation of materialist historicism as an underlying premise. Individual contributions to the book provide an overview of current reflection and research on issues of circulation in relation to global art history and the globalization of art past and present. Grand palaces of culture, opera theaters marked the center of European cities like the cathedrals of the Middle Ages. As opera cast its spell, almost every European city and society aspired to have its own opera house, and dozens of new theaters were constructed in the course of the "long" nineteenth century. At the time of the French Revolution in 1789, only a few, mostly royal, opera theaters, existed in Europe. However, by the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries nearly every large town possessed a theater in which operas were performed, especially in Central Europe, the region upon which this book concentrates. This volume, a revised and extended version of two well-reviewed books published in German and Czech, explores the social and political background to this "opera mania" in nineteenth century Central Europe. After tracing the major trends in the opera history of the period, including the emergence of national genres of opera and its various social functions and cultural meanings, the author contrasts the histories of the major houses in Dresden (a court theater), Lemberg (a theater built and sponsored by aristocrats), and Prague (a civic institution). Beyond the operatic institutions and their key stage productions, composers such as Carl Maria von Weber, Richard Wagner, Bedřich Smetana, Stanislaw Moniuszko, Antonín Dvořák, and Richard Strauss are put in their social and political contexts. The concluding chapter, bringing together the different leitmotifs of social and cultural history explored in the rest of the book, explains the specificities of opera life in Central Europe within a wider European and global framework.
