Depuis 1950, pas moins de 50 hebdomadaires d’information générale ont publié un dernier numéro en Belgique francophone. Quelques-uns meurent en silence. Mais la plupart publient au moins un texte où ils se regardent dans le miroir. Que nous disent-ils alors d’eux-mêmes, de la presse et du journalisme ? Pour répondre à ces questions, la recherche ici présentée porte sur un corpus historique composé du dernier numéro édité par 52 hebdomadaires d’information générale belges francophones « décédés » après-guerre (1950-2000). Après avoir défini le concept de dernier numéro en fonction des divers processus de concentrations de la presse, et après avoir dessiné le portrait de l’hebdomadaire d’information générale au départ des deux grands paradigmes de la presse écrite que sont le journal et le périodique, l’analyse du corpus s’intéresse prioritairement aux procédés autoréférentiels du discours médiatique. Au dernier jour de leur publication, bon nombre de titres de presse n’hésitent pas à se mettre en scène : ils réfléchissent leur propres énoncés (facssimilés...), ils procèdent à des récits autobiographiques ou autocommémoratifs, ils autojustifient leurs choix éditoriaux antérieurs, ils font l’autopromotion d’un futur produit d’information... Bref, ils reflètent l’énoncé, ils révèlent les mécanismes de l’énonciation et ils disent qu’ils le font. Cette recherche, espérons-le, permet de mieux cerner la représentation que se font les journaux et les journalistes de leur identité et de leur rôle social. Et cela à un moment particulièrement douloureux : celui où ils brisent leur plume. De même qu’un mourant chuchote ses dernières vérités à l’oreille de celui qui le veille, se pencher sur les récits de (fin) de vie présents dans des dizaines de derniers numéros en révèle un peu plus sur la crise de l’information écrite généraliste.

This study of six early twentieth-century periodicals serves to refine the traditional image of the inter-war journal as the pre-eminent vehicle of artistic and intellectual renewal. Every periodical has its own history but general themes are clearly identified. Traces emerge of a common commitment to the internationalisation of the arts and we find early and unexpected discussion of Freud, Chaplin and Joyce in Brussels and Berlin, jazz in Vienna and Brussels, Ezra Pound in the Netherlands and Belgium. In contrast to this internationalisation are the ambitions of the various editors to play a significant role in their national cultures. This tension between national and international influences was in the first instance stimulating and innovative. Later, as a result of political and socio-economic developments, the newly achieved openness and exchange were gradually diminished and finally disappeared as did the periodicals themselves.

This book brings together a series of papers presented at a University of Montreal interdisciplinary conference held in March 2014 and devoted to various little-known facets of the First World War’s cultural and social history. The commemorative activities of the war’s centennial triggered the conference, as this anniversary had precipitated a lively renewal of historical reflections on the causes and consequences of this global conflict. If the commemoration was an occasion to foster a more civic-minded pedagogical approach regarding the meaning of this major historical event, the conference itself strove to engage the rich and substantial body of research about the war that had evolved over the past few decades. While taking national and regional approaches into account, this book also aligns itself with the recent interest in a global history of the Great War that, by not excluding various national traditions, strives to re-examine the causes and consequences of the conflict from a perspective whose scope extends beyond Europe.
