Communism in twentieth-century Europe is predominantly narrated as a totalitarian movement and/or regime. This book aims to go beyond this narrative and provide an alternative framework to describe the communist past. This reframing is possible thanks to the concepts of generation and gender, which are used in the book as analytical categories in an intersectional overlap. The publication covers twentieth-century Poland, Czechoslovakia/Czech Republic, the Soviet Union/Russia, former Yugoslavia, Turkish communities in West Germany, Italy, and Cuba (as a comparative point of reference). It provides a theoretical frame and overview chapters on several important gender and generation narratives about communism, anticommunism, and postcommunism. Its starting point is the belief that although methodological reflection on communism, as well as on generations and gender, is conducted extensively in contemporary research, the overlapping of these three terms is still rare. The main focus in the first part is on methodological issues. The second part features studies which depict the possibility of generational-gender interpretations of history. The third part is informed by biographical perspectives. The last part shows how the problem of generations and gender is staged via the medium of literature and how it can be narrated.

«L’espressione cittadine di carta mi è stata suggerita durante una delle puntate che Radio 3 ha dedicato “Agli archivi dei diari”. In queste giornate di reclusione sto ascoltando molto Radio 3, e così le sue frequenze sono arrivate a me, in qualche modo “cittadina di carta”, sotto un certo punto di vista: detentrice di diritti civili e politici sospesi o annullati in questo contesto di emergenza. Non mi stupisce che le cittadine di carta della Rivoluzione francese mi siano tornate alla mente. Anch’io, come loro, mi sono messa alla scrittura, quasi a voler esercitare alcune delle libertà di cui in questo momento sono privata, come la maggior parte dei cittadini del mondo.» Natalia Caprili, in arte “Nai”, si laurea a Pisa in Lettere e Filosofia nel 2000 con una tesi di Filosofia politica sul ruolo delle donne nei caffè durante la Rivoluzione francese. Prosegue gli studi a Parigi con un D.E.A. in “Histoires et théorie de Civilisations” all’Università di Parigi VIII. Si apre un percorso di ricerca pratica e teorica che la vede a contatto con documenti originali del XVIII Secolo, ha inizio un lavoro di analisi ed interpretazione delle fonti e, fra quelle, rivestono un ruolo centrale i verbali di arresto conservati negli Archivi della Polizia di Parigi. Durante il soggiorno parigino, accompagna alla Ricerca la disciplina dell’Arte pittorica. Nasce in quegli anni un linguaggio risultato di un sincretismo fra Filosofia, Storia e Arte, compresa quella musicale. Vive a Parigi tra il 2002 e il 2005, e continua a viverla come artista in vari periodi dell’anno, coltivando ed approfondendo di concerto la Ricerca storica e quella artistica. Quest’ultima la vede impegnata a Parigi anche nella decorazione pittorica delle vetrine durante il periodo natalizio, illustrazioni “effimere e di passaggio” su vetro visibili nella Capitale francese da ormai 18 anni. Fra le arti sperimentate emergono l’illustrazione e la scultura ad uncinetto, linguaggi che ormai accompagnano sempre il lavoro intellettuale, quasi a completarne e ad arricchirne il contenuto, come in Cittadine di carta, saggio storico-filosofico illustrato. Molte le mostre fatte in giro per il mondo, grazie alla collaborazione con Carré D’Artistes, galleria francese con cui Nai Caprili lavora dal 2012. Dal 2014 si dedica anche al Teatro di figura, e crea un circo, “Il Circo Nai & Max” uno spettacolo di marionette di carta accompagnato dalla musica. Sempre nel Teatro di figura, Nai sta ultimando, in collaborazione, un nuovo spettacolo, Le meraviglie di Acromazia, sul surriscaldamento climatico e le tematiche ambientali. Dal 2014 canta e suona la fisarmonica nel gruppo di musica dal mondo “Nai et le hommes du Monde” e nel duo di musica italo-francese “Nai and I”.

This volume provides readers interested in urban history with a collection of essays on the evolution of public space in that paradigmatic western city which is Rome. Scholars specialized in different historical periods contributed chapters, in order to find common themes which weave their way through one of the most complex urban histories of western civilization. Divided into five chronological sections (Antiquity, Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Modern and Contemporary) the volume opens with the issue of how public space was defined in classical Roman law and how ancient city managers organized the maintenance of these spaces, before moving on to explore how this legacy was redefined and reinterpreted during the Middle Ages. The third group of essays examines how the imposition of papal order on feuding families during the Renaissance helped introduce a new urban plan which could satisfy both functional and symbolic needs. The fourth section shows how modern Rome continued to express strong interest in the control and management of public space, the definition of which was necessarily selective in this vastly extensive city. The collection ends with an essay on the contemporary debate for revitalizing Rome's eastern periphery. Through this long-term chronological approach the volume offers a truly unique insight into the urban development of one of Europe’s most important cities, and concludes with a discuss of the challenges public space faces today after having served for so many centuries as a driving force in urban history.
