Huit ans après la première édition de cet ouvrage, la gestion externe de l'informatique a connu d'importantes évolutions. Les nouveaux besoins des clients, le développement de nouvelles technologies, le nombre croissant de clients recours à ce mode de gestion, y compris dans leurs relations transnationales, ont favorisé sa mutation et l'apparition de nouvelles fonctions externalisées (telle que la logistique, par exemple). Cette évolution se manifeste également dans le choix des termes utilisés pour décrire le phénomène de la gestion externe. De la notion de " facilities management ", qui incluait le service bureau et l'exploitation des systèmes informatiques, on est passé à celle d'" infogérance ", puis d'" externalisation ". Ce dernier terme recouvre toutefois un champ plus large puisqu'il vise le fait de confier à un prestataire extérieur tout type de fonction normalement gérée en interne. Il ne s'agit donc pas, contrairement à l'infogérance, d'une notion spécifique au domaine de l'informatique ou des télécommunications. Ces nouvelles orientations posent un certain nombre de questions juridiques qui ont des répercussions sur les relations contractuelles. La troisième édition de " Facilities Management " et le droit en tient compte, par l'introduction de nouveaux thèmes, comme le benchmarking, le transfert de savoir-faire, les aspects internationaux ou encore l'étude des particularités de l'infogérance dans le secteur public. Elle fait également une place plus importante à certaines questions-clés, comme celles relatives au droit du travail et à la réversibilité. Enfin, cette nouvelle édition est enrichie d'un précieux modèle de contrat d'externalisation.
