Partisan sans équivoque de la laïcité, il met néanmoins en lumière les difficultés et risques de dérive impliqués par une vision « totale » de cette dernière, en s’appuyant tant sur son expérience personnelle que sur des études et des précédents étrangers. Au passage, il remet en question beaucoup d’idées reçues, dégonfle des mythes dangereusement répandus et rappelle quelques épisodes de notre histoire, certains moins glorieux que d’autres, en lien avec les relations interculturelles. Au coeur de l’ouvrage : une mise en garde contre une instrumentalisation de la laïcité qui mènerait à l’exclusion sociale d’une partie de la population, des femmes surtout. Un ostracisme « religieux » ainsi institutionnalisé, sans parallèle en Amérique du Nord, nous aliénerait pour longtemps la collectivité qui en constituerait la cible principale, soit la communauté musulmane en croissance. Une erreur historique, d’autant que, soutient l’auteur, cette dernière est composée majoritairement de francophones, souvent sensibles a priori aux aspirations nationales des Québécois, et dont la solidarité nous serait bien utile dans la défense du français. L’ouvrage démontre le caractère incontournable et avantageux de l’immigration. Il nous renvoie à notre attitude face au pluralisme et à nos erreurs passées à ce sujet. Ou bien le Québec français fera l’effort nécessaire pour élargir sa définition de lui-même en acceptant sa propre diversité croissante, ou bien il se résignera à se réduire à une minorité ethnique plutôt que de s’élever au rang de nation.
