Chroniques historiques de la bataille des Ardennes Si la ville de Bastogne et le fameux Nuts de McAuliffe symbolisent la résistance américaine lors de l’offensive allemande dans les Ardennes en décembre 1944, on ne peut oublier les combats acharnés livrés par les troupes américaines à Stavelot et dans la vallée de l’Amblève contre la fameuse 1re SS Panzer Division Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler (LAH) qui s’était vu confier la mission d’atteindre la première la Meuse. L’ouvrage relate les événements survenus tout au long de la progression de la division blindée de Stadtkyll en Allemagne jusqu’à Stoumont dans la vallée de l’Amblève. Il s’attache à décrire et à essayer d’expliquer les manquements et les erreurs commises lors de la conduite des opérations par certains états-majors et commandants d’unités tant du côté américain que du côté allemand. Il rappelle aussi les crimes horribles commis par les hommes de la LAH. L'auteur nous livre dans cet ouvrage de référence, un travail richement documenté sur l'histoire militaire belge de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. A PROPOS DE L'AUTEUR Henri Castor fut officier de renseignements de l'armée belge à la fin des années 1940 et au début des années 1950. Sa carrière militaire l'amène à devenir en 1991 attaché du cabinet du Ministère de la Défense nationale. Henri Castor a un intérêt prononcé pour la Seconde Guerre mondiale, et en particulier pour la bataille des Ardennes. EXTRAIT Si, sur la ligne de front, les lignes téléphoniques et les radios souffrirent énormément des bombardements allemands à l'aube du 16 décembre, les unités se trouvant légèrement à l'arrière disposaient encore de leurs moyens de communication, de téléphones civils, de radios, d'estafettes ; de plus, il devait leur sembler, au vu des troupes qui se repliaient, des réfugiés qui s'enfuyaient, que des événements graves se déroulaient sur la ligne de front. La lenteur de la réaction de l'état-major de la Ière armée du général Hodges, installé à Spa, à quelques kilomètres des villes de Malmedy et de Stavelot, reste inexplicable alors qu'on y avait déjà appris le massacre des prisonniers américains à Baugné le 17 décembre à 14 heures et, quelques minutes plus tard, la fuite du général Timberlake de Ligneuville devant les blindés allemands. Malgré cela, c'est dans la nuit du 17 au 18 décembre, à la veille du troisième jour d'offensive, qu'une faible force américaine fut enfin dirigée sur Stavelot qu'elle atteignit à 4 heures. En pleine obscurité et méconnaissant la région, une partie de cette troupe sera expédiée sur la rive sud de l'Amblève déjà occupée par les Allemands : preuve de l'ignorance de la situation au niveau supérieur de la Ière armée.

Engineering has experienced a technological revolution, but the basic engineering techniques applied in safety and reliability engineering, created in a simpler, analog world, have changed very little over the years. In this groundbreaking book, Nancy Leveson proposes a new approach to safety—more suited to today's complex, sociotechnical, software-intensive world—based on modern systems thinking and systems theory. Revisiting and updating ideas pioneered by 1950s aerospace engineers in their System Safety concept, and testing her new model extensively on real-world examples, Leveson has created a new approach to safety that is more effective, less expensive, and easier to use than current techniques. Arguing that traditional models of causality are inadequate, Leveson presents a new, extended model of causation (Systems-Theoretic Accident Model and Processes, or STAMP), then shows how the new model can be used to create techniques for system safety engineering, including accident analysis, hazard analysis, system design, safety in operations, and management of safety-critical systems. She applies the new techniques to real-world events including the friendly-fire loss of a U.S. Blackhawk helicopter in the first Gulf War; the Vioxx recall; the U.S. Navy SUBSAFE program; and the bacterial contamination of a public water supply in a Canadian town. This text is designed to acquaint the reader with the commonly used procedures of juice and wine analysis as they are generally practiced in the industry, and as they are taught in the Department of Enology at California State University, Fresno. However, such a widespread use of fossil fuels by a constantly growing world population (from 2. 3 billion in 1939 to 6. 5 billion in 2006) gives rise to the two problems of oil supply and environmental degradation. The problemrelated to oil supply is caused by the fact that fossil fuels are not - newable primary energy sources: This means that since the rst barrel of petroleum has been pumped out from the ground, we have been exhausting a heritage given by nature.
