This volume is the result of an international conference held at Sapienza University of Rome in June 2014, which brought together scholars from different countries to re-analyse and re-interpret the events of the First World War, one hundred years after a young Bosnian Serb student from the “Mlada Bosna,” Gavrilo Princip, “lit the fuse” and ignited the conflict which was to forever change the world. The Great War – initially on a European and then on a world scale – demonstrated the fragility of the international system of the European balance of powers, and determined the dissolution of the great multinational empires and the need to redraw the map of Europe according to the principles of national sovereignty. This book provides new insights into theories of this conflict, and is characterized by internationality, interdisciplinarity and a combination of different research methods. Questo lavoro, dell’autore di Luigi Cadorna. Una biografia militare, cerca di colmare le due lacune integrando un profilo biografico di Ar-mando Diaz, il Duca della Vittoria, con la Relazione Ufficiale sulla battaglia compilata dal comando Supremo, un lavoro assai dettagliato e, cosa degna di nota, assai corretto dal punto di vista storiografico, senza troppe concessioni alla retorica ed allo spirito del tempo, tanto che può essere ancor oggi letta con il massimo interesse, ed i bollettini di guerra dal 24 Ottobre al 4 Novembre, che della Relazione costi-tuiscono indispensabile corollario Una vittoria che veniva ad un anno esatto dopo lo sfondamento tedesco a Plezzo e Tolmino, e la ritirata al piave: ma l’Italia, grazie a molteplici fattori, uno dei principali dei quali fu proprio Diaz, oramai data da alleati e nemici come sull’orlo della disfatta, seppe ricono-scersi come Nazione, e riprendersi, bloccare il nemico sul Piave nella battaglia del Solstizio ed infine uscire vincitrice dal conflitto. Churchill ha scritto che Nessun popolo, tranne i romani dopo Canne, seppero riprendersi tanto rapidamente da una sconfitta. Il libro vuole riportare l’interesse su una figura determinante della storia militare dell’Italia del XX secolo come Armando Diaz, e su una battaglia di cui qualcuno si è addirittura spinto a scrivere, senza vergognarsene, che non fu mai combattuta, né fu mai sparato un colpo: ciò malgrado dal 24 ottobre al 4 novembre gli italiani ed i loro alleati ebbero 36.498 tra morti e feriti- nell’intera campagna di Grecia del 1940-41 per confronto gli italiani ebbero 20.000 perdite- e gli imperiali 90.000 morti, feriti e dispersi e 426.000 prigionieri. Il lavoro è completato dall’ordine di battaglia, il più dettagliato pubblicato sino ad oggi, del Regio Esercito e delle unità alleate alla vigila dell’offensiva di Ottobre, e da una cronologia dell’ultimo anno di guerra, che permetterà al lettore di avere un inquadramento degli avve-nimenti senza bisogno di appesantire il testo, oltre ad una ricca parte iconografica proveniente dall’Archivio di Stato e dell’USSME.

Abbiamo cercato con questo agile lavoro di fornire uno strumento a chi sia appassionato della grande guerra o semplicemente curioso di saperne di più, che vada oltre l'agiografia da una parte e la dissacrazione antinazionale dall'altra, smentendo nel contempo alcune leggende ancor oggi diffuse, come quella che vorrebbe che a Vittorio Veneto ci sia stata una passeggiata militare, che non ci fu, perché gli austroungarici, a dispetto di alcuni ammutinamenti di reparti, si batterono bene, soprattutto all'inizio della battaglia e in particolar modo sul Grappa, tanto da infliggere dure perdite agli attaccanti.
