Ce livre est né d'une constatation : le monde est en train de vivre des bouleversements considérables et les modalités d'ajustement sont difficiles. Tout se passe comme si l'effondrement de notre monde bipolaire, entre États-Unis et Union Soviétique, avait ouvert la boîte de Pandore des conflits disséminés auxquels nous avons bien du mal à donner un sens. Pourtant, si le monde est devenu plus insaisissable, parce redevenu multipolaire, il l'était déjà il y a plusieurs siècles.C'est entre 1200 et 1600 que l'ensemble du monde a progressivement été mis en relation, aboutissant à un grand désenclavement, ou à une première "mondialisation" pour reprendre un terme à la mode. Refusant l'approche traditionnelle, européo-centrée, de l'histoire des relations internationales, basée sur le concept de l'État-nation, Jean-Michel Sallmann privilégie dans cet essai "politiquement incorrect" le paradigme civilisationnel tel que l'ont décrit Samuel Huntington dans son Choc des civilisations et avant lui Fernand Braudel. Il souligne combien au début du XIIIe siècle, l'humanité est cloisonnée, divisée en quatre grandes civilisations - chinoise, européenne, musulmane et hindoue - qui, par leur poids démographique et leur dynamisme, jouent un rôle majeur sur le plan stratégique, culturel et économique, laissant pourtant des territoires entiers coupés du reste du monde : l'Amérique, l'Afrique noire et le continent austral. Les invasions mongoles viendront briser partiellement l'isolement de cet Ancien Monde, avant que le cataclysme de la seconde moitié du XIVe siècle, engendré par la Peste noire et ses conséquences, redistribue les cartes en faveur de l'Occident chrétien. The turn of the 1960s-70s, characterized by the rapid acceleration of globalization, prompted a radical transformation in the perception of urban and natural environments. The urban revolution and related prospect of the total urbanisation of the planet, in concert with rapid population growth and resource exploitation, instigated a surge in environmental awareness and activism. One implication of this moment is a growing recognition of the integration and interconnection of natural and urban entities. The present collection is an interdisciplinary inquiry into the changing modes of representation of nature in the city beginning from the turn of the 1960s/70s. Bringing together a number of different disciplinary approaches, including architectural studies and aesthetics, heritage studies and economics, environmental science and communication, the collection reflects upon the changing perception of socio-natures in the context of increasing urban expansion and global interconnectedness as they are/were manifest in specific representations. Using cases studies from around the globe, the collection offers a historical and theoretical understanding of a paradigmatic shift whose material and symbolic legacies are still accompanying us in the early 21st century.

In this important new book the renowned historian Serge Gruzinski returns to two episodes in the sixteenth century which mark a decisive stage in global history and show how China and Mexico experienced the expansion of Europe. In the early 1520s, Magellan set sail for Asia by the Western route, Cortes seized Mexico and some Portuguese based in Malacca dreamed of colonizing China. The Aztec Eagle was destroyed but the Chinese Dragon held strong and repelled the invaders - after first seizing their cannon. For the first time, people from three continents encountered one other, confronted one other and their lives became entangled. These events were of great interest to contemporaries and many people at the time grasped the magnitude of what was going on around them. The Iberians succeeded in America and failed in China. The New World became inseparable from the Europeans who were to conquer it, while the Celestial Empire became, for a long time to come, an unattainable goal. Gruzinski explores this encounter between civilizations that were different from one another but that already fascinated contemporaries, and he shows that our world today bears the mark of this distant age. For it was in the sixteenth century that human history began to be played out on a global stage. It was then that connections between different parts of the world began to accelerate, not only between Europe and the Americas but also between Europe and China. This is what is revealed by a global history of the sixteenth century, conceived as another way of reading the Renaissance, less Eurocentric and more in tune with our age.

This volume suggests a new way of doing global history. Instead of offering a sweeping and generalizing overview of the past, we propose a ‘micro-spatial’ approach, combining micro-history with the concept of space. A focus on primary sources and awareness of the historical discontinuities and unevennesses characterizes the global history that emerges here. We use labour as our lens in this volume. The resulting micro-spatial history of labour addresses the management and recruitment of labour, its voluntary and coerced spatial mobility, its political perception and representation and the workers’ own agency and social networks. The individual chapters are written by contributors whose expertise covers the late medieval Eastern Mediterranean to present-day Sierra Leone, through early modern China and Italy, eighteenth-century Cuba and the Malvinas/Falklands, the journeys of a missionary between India and Brazil and those of Christian captives across the Ottoman empire and Spain. Longtemps considéré comme une région périphérique en Méditerranée et dans l'Islam, le Maghreb médiéval est au contraire très tôt intégré dans des réseaux d'échanges, d'abord dans le cadre de la construction d'un espace islamique largement ouvert sur la mer, ensuite dans celui d'une Méditerranée dominée par les puissances latines européennes. Connecté à la fois à l'Orient, à l'Afrique subsaharienne et à la Méditerranée, le Maghreb islamique s'insère entre le VIIe et le XVe siècle dans des connexions complexes qui donnent à ses ports un rôle croissant dans les échanges commerciaux, mais aussi plus largement dans la structuration de l'espace maghrébin et méditerranéen, à la fois comme pôles d'impulsion régionaux et interfaces entre des réseaux terrestres et maritimes. L'analyse des sources arabes et latines permet ainsi de montrer comment les acteurs politiques et économiques contribuent à faire évoluer ces réseaux commerciaux à différentes échelles, en premier lieu dans un espace centré sur les pays d'Islam, puis à partir du XIe siècle dans une économie-monde en formation, connectant l'Afrique, l'Europe latine et l'Asie.
