» Joseph Staline, 20 juin 1941.

This volume presents the intellectual autobiographies of fourteen leading scholars in the fields of history, literature, film and cultural studies who have dedicated a considerable part of their career to researching the history and memories of France during the Second World War. Basedin five different countries, Margaret Atack, Marc Dambre, Laurent Douzou, Hilary Footitt, Robert Gildea, Richard J. Golsan, Bertram M. Gordon, Christopher Lloyd, Colin Nettelbeck, Denis Peschanski, Renée Poznanski, Henry Rousso, Peter Tame, and Susan Rubin Suleiman have playeda crucial role in shaping and reshaping what has become a thought-provoking field of research. This volume, which also includes an interview with historian Robert O. Paxton, clarifies the rationales and driving forces behind their work and thus behind our current understanding of one of the darkest and most vividly remembered pages of history in contemporary France.

Policing Paris written by Clifford D. Rosenberg and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-07-05 with History categories.

The surveillance of immigrants and potential terrorists preoccupies leaders throughout the industrialized world. Yet these concerns are hardly new. Policing Paris examines a critical moment in the history of immigration control and political surveillance. Drawing on massive police archives and other materials, Clifford Rosenberg shows how in the years after the Great War the French police, terrified by the Bolshevik Revolution and the specter of immigrant criminality, became the first major force anywhere systematically to enforce distinctions of citizenship and national origins. As the French capital emerged as a haven for refugees, dissidents, and workers from throughout Europe and across the Mediterranean in the 1920s, police officers raided immigrant neighborhoods to scare illegal aliens into registering with authorities and arrested those whose papers were not in order. The police began to concentrate on colonial workers from North Africa, tracking these workers with a special police brigade and segregating them in their own hospital when they fell ill. Transformed by their enforcement, legal categories that had existed for hundreds of years began to matter as never before. They determined whether or not families could remain together and whether people could keep their jobs or were forced to flee. During World War II, identity controls marked out entire populations for physical destruction. The treatment of foreigners during the Third Republic, Rosenberg contends, shaped the subsequent treatment of Jews by Vichy. At the same time, however, he argues that the new methods of identification pioneered between the wars are more directly relevant to the present day. They created forms of inclusion and inequality that remain pervasive, as industrial welfare states around the world find themselves compelled to provide benefits to their own citizens and recruit foreign nationals to satisfy their labor needs.

Les Cent Jours De La D Portation Des Juifs De Belgique written by Maxime Steinberg and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1984 with Antisemitism categories.

Vol. 1 discusses anti-Jewish legislation and antisemitic Belgian national movements. Vol. 2 deals with Nazi actions against Belgian Jews from the first arrests in May 1940, and roundups and detention in camps such as Breendonk. The Belgian administration and the Association des Juifs de Belgique were compelled to collaborate with the Germans, while many immigrant, left-wing, and Zionist Jews helped found the Résistance. The introduction of the yellow badge in June 1942 and the transfer of Jews to forced labor in northern France aroused public criticism, which did not prevent the mass deportation of 45% of Belgian Jewry to Auschwitz in the summer of 1942. Vol. 3 describes how the rest of the Jews were saved by the Jewish resistance movement and with the assistance of various sectors of the population, especially believing Christians who helped hide the Jews. The Church, however, was not officially involved. Describes Jewish partisan activities, including the liberation of many Jews from the twentieth convoy to Auschwitz.
