C'est parce qu'il n'existait aucun ouvrage moderne francophone traitant des feux d'artifice que celui-ci a vu le jour. Il apparaît effectivement que peu de personnes connaissent le fonctionnement réel des pièces dont elles admirent si souvent les effets. Or, chaque année, on tire en France plus de 12 000 feux dont 8 000 lors du 14 juillet. Parmi ceux-ci, les plus chers peuvent facilement atteindre plusieurs dizaines de milliers d'euros alors qu'un petit feu d'artifice de village coûte de 1 500 à 10 000 euros. Parallèlement à ces " petits " feux, sont programmés chaque année des spectacles pyrotechniques de plus grande importance pour des occasions diverses : inaugurations spéciales, festivals, feux de grandes villes telles que Paris, Lyon... On découvre grâce à Didier Brunel l'ingéniosité des techniques, souvent très anciennes, mises en œuvre, du broyage des poudres à la confection particulièrement complexe de certaines pièces. Peu d'artificiers maîtrisent l'ensemble des processus. Qui le croirait à voir éclore dans le ciel serein des nuits d'été toutes ces figures brillantes et multicolores ?Pour cela, il faut se souvenir que c'est la poudre qui les inventa. C'est par l'intermédiaire de l'Italie que le feu "artificiel" fait son entrée sur le vieux continent. Avec le temps, bien sûr, le spectacle évolue, se dépouille des artifices que sont les décors et supports divers pour atteindre une sorte d'épure qu'on lui connaît aujourd'hui. De même, cet art très empirique, longtemps protégé par des secrets de fabrication, profite des progrès de la science pour devenir une industrie plus performante et aussi plus fiable. La pyrotechnie reste néanmoins une activité dangereuse. Activité sérieuse aussi, plus diversifiée qu'il n'y paraît puisque à côté des "belles bleues", on produit également des artifices agricoles, industriels ou militaires et que les marins ou les aviateurs font grand usage des fusées de détresse ou de signalisation. Enfin, comme nous n'en sommes plus à un paradoxe près, ajoutons que ce spectacle, éphémère entre tous, est pourtant de ceux qui impriment dans nos mémoires le souvenir heureux de moment éblouis.
