Il testo delle Ultime lettere di Jacopo Ortis, l’opera attraverso la quale la letteratura italiana riscopre il romanzo e si allinea ai grandi esemplari europei, è dato anche nella prima edizione bolognese del 1798. Assieme all’Ortis, la Notizia intorno a Didimo Chierico, il magistrale scritto con il quale, nel 1813, Foscolo rovescia l’immagine di sé e ne rilancia una nuova, ritagliata sulla lettura delle opere di Sterne. Ampio spazio è riservato all’opera saggistica, fra cui le bellissime orazioni pavesi Dell’origine e dell’ufficio della letteratura e Sull’origine e i limiti della giustizia. Seguono i Saggi sul Petrarca, grande esempio, prima del De Sanctis, di una vena di critico-scrittore tuttora da riscoprire e configurare nei suoi aspetti più moderni e illuminanti, e le Epoche della lingua italiana, geniale ricognizione dei rapporti fra lingua e letteratura italiana nel corso dei secoli. Chiudono la raccolta l’appassionata e appassionante Lettera apologetica e un florilegio delle lettere d’amore, fra le più belle che siano mai state scritte nella nostra lingua. Ugo Foscolo nacque a Zante nel 1778. Ebbe vita intensa e avventurosa, amori appassionati e disordinati, in un’epoca di grandi crisi sociali. La speranza in una rivoluzione che portasse il riscatto dei popoli e la restaurazione che deluse ogni aspirazione innovativa condussero il poeta a comprendere che le promesse della politica e della religione sono un’illusione, a proclamare che l’unico conforto vero e sincero in grado di rispondere alle esigenze della gente è la poesia. Letterato, polemista, politico e soldato, deve la sua fama soprattutto alle Ultime lettere di Jacopo Ortis, al carme Dei Sepolcri e al poema Le Grazie. In esilio dal 1815, morì in povertà a Londra nel 1827. Di Foscolo la Newton Compton ha pubblicato Ultime lettere di Jacopo Ortis, Lettere d’amore e la raccolta Le grandi opere.
