Per chi ha interesse alla storia letteraria dei tre testi qui commentati (1 e 2 a Timoteo, a Tito) la novità maggiore di questa lettura consiste nell'accettazione e riproposizione dell'ipotesi già nota che il "corpus pastorale" sia stato composto da teologi, fedeli discepoli di Paolo, in occasione di un'edizione del "corpus paolinum" già costituito dalle lettere autentiche (Rm, 1-2Cor, Gal, Fil, Flm, 1 Tes) e da quelle pesudonime o "deuteropaoline" (2Tes, Ef, Col), come sintesi della sua teologia e sua attuazione in una diversa situazione storica della Chiesa. Per un teologo la sua novità è in una più rigorosa definizione del rapporto tra "traditio apostolica" e "successo apostolica", dove appare evidente che solo la fedeltà alla dottrina tramandata da prima è garanzia di validità della seconda, e non viceversa, perché quest'ultima dipende da mutevole contingenza storica. Per tutti coloro che accedono al "servizio ecclesiastico" le tre lettere sono un reale "vademecum" o "Direttorio", affinché i pastori sappiano come comportarsi per dirigere e amministrare "la casa di Dio, che è la chiesa del Dio vivente, sostegno e supporto della verità"(1Tm 3,14-15).
