"Le racisme est la dévalorisation profitable d'une différence" ou, plus techniquement, "le racisme est la valorisation, généralisée et définitive, de différences réelles ou imaginaires, au profit de l'accusateur et au détriment de sa victime, afin de légitimer une agression". Il y a une trentaine d'années, Albert Memmi proposait cette définition du racisme, largement utilisée depuis par les chercheurs et les enseignants. Il n'a cessé d'enrichir et de préciser sa réflexion sur le racisme au fil de nombreux textes. On retrouvera dans ce livre, outre la place centrale du racisme dans la pensée de l'auteur, les deux pôles de cette définition : la liaison étroite entre le racisme et la notion de différence ("le raciste, écrit-il, prétend toujours utiliser quelque différence pour en tirer profit"), et, d'autre part, la parenté entre le racisme et l'oppression ("le racisme est le symbole et le résumé de toute oppression").
