La successione e la dialettica tra le forme politiche (Città, Impero, Chiesa e Nazione) che questo libro ricostruisce delineano così una prospettiva in cui l’incessante movimento dell’umanità odierna è ricondotto all’interno della più ampia e adeguata questione della vera comunità universale, o delle fonti e dei criteri dell’operazione umana: le metamorfosi della città sono a ben vedere le esperienze in cui l’umanità ha pensato, governato e dunque realizzato se stessa, cercando la legge e la cornice della propria azione. Attraverso lo sguardo che Manent offre agli europei il mondo non si mostra più un «processo» autonomo, irresistibile e creatore di «valori» o di «immagini», bensì il luogo intelligibile del confronto tra possibilità politiche e versioni dell’universale che occorre ancora meditare e incarnare.

L’idea della “terza età del mondo”, auspicata da Lessing ne L’educazione del genere umano (1780), è il motivo di fondo che guida la cultura tedesca, e poi quella europea, tra la fine del ‘700 e gli inizi del ‘900. L’età dello Spirito, come tempo della piena maturità, è l’utopia della seconda modernità, quella illuministico-romantica, che si propone come soluzione del dramma della prima dominato dal conflitto politico-religioso aperto dalla Riforma. La crisi del modello della terza età, al centro delle critiche di Nietzsche e delle grandi tragedie del ‘900, segna l’orizzonte della cultura contemporanea.
