In Le ministère sacerdotal dans la tradition syriaque primitive, Tanios Bou Mansour analyzes the Christian priesthood in four Syriac writers: Aphraate, Ephrem, Jacob of Sarug and Narsaï. Their conception of priesthood is illuminated by the Priesthood of Christ and contextualized within the continuity of the priesthood of the Old Testament. These authors’ originality and actuality lies in their conception of election, of apostolic succession, of “sacerdotal” traits attributed to women in the Bible, and especially of the priest who, commissioned by the Church, executes the action of the Christ and the Spirit.

Gregory of Nazianzus and Ephrem the Syrian are both regarded as foundational poets for their respective literary traditions. They wrote in the same period, the 4th Century, and they both devoted a cycle of poems to a debated theme of the time: bishops. Aim of this work is enhancing the appreciation of these cycles (Gregory’s carmina II, 1, 10; 12; 13; 17 and Ephrem’s carmina nisibena 13-21) as works of literature embedded in the performance and reading practices of the time, in theological debates on the episcopal office and in their respective communities. The book compares performance and transimission methods of the two corpora, the word choice and imagery describing the episcopal office and how portraits of real-life bishops are influenced by theological expectations on what a bishop should be. Two chapters are devoted to literary phenomena peculiar to each author. This book, the first extensive comparison of these two authors from a literary point of view, will interest scholars of Late Antique poetry and literature, Church history and Patristic theology. A new English translation of both corporas constitutes the appendix.

This volume offers a critical edition and annotated translation of twenty metrical homilies attributed to Isaac of Antioch, a late fifth-century CE Syriac poet. The works in this collection, the majority of which are examples of the Syriac rebuke genre, are aimed at the moral reformation of the Syrian Christian community. The introduction, which provides the first detailed study of the manuscript tradition of the corpus as a whole, identifies four different Isaacs whose writings were intermingled already in late antiquity and develops criteria for distinguishing among their works. The Church of the Holy Spirit, written by Russian priest and scholar Nicholas Afanasiev (1893–1966), is one of the most important works of twentieth-century Orthodox theology. Afanasiev was a member of the “Paris School” of émigré intellectuals who gathered in Paris after the Russian revolution, where he became a member of the faculty of St. Sergius Orthodox Seminary. The Church of the Holy Spirit, which offers a rediscovery of the eucharistic and communal nature of the church in the first several centuries, was written over a number of years beginning in the 1940s and continuously revised until its posthumous publication in French in 1971.
