Engramma issue 203 “Guerra archeologia e architettura. Le Navi di Nemi”, focuses on the Roman ships exctracted from the Lake Nemi and placed in a dedicated museum, in the historical context of fascist propaganda. The ships where destroyed during the Allied campain in Italy in 1944. The introductive papers by Monica Centanni, Daniela De Angelis, and Elisabetta Pallottino Il Centro di Documentazione di Nemi. Un luogo, e un sito, per la ricerca sulle Navi, il Lago, il Museo, and Il Museo delle Navi romane di Nemi. Passato presente e futuro, underline the necessity to reactivate and coordinate research over the Museum and surroundings, in a multidisciplinary approach, and propose the creation of a dedicated Research Centre. Giacomo Calandra di Roccolino addresses the history of the architecture of the Museum in Architettura e propaganda. Il Museo delle Navi di Nemi, spunti per una ricerca, a masterpiece by architect Vittorio Ballio Morpurgo. The relationship between the project of the Museum and the surrounding landscape, that inspired the seminal The Golden bough, by James Frazer (1915), is the topic of the article written by Agostina Incutti, Elisabetta Pallottino, Paola Porretta Paesaggio sacro, pittura di paesaggio, paesaggio costruito Ricerche in corso sul paesaggio nemorense e il Museo delle Navi romane. Flavio Altamura e Stefano Paolucci reconstruct historically the dramatic events that caused the fire that destroyed the ships in 1944 (Una lente sull’incendio delle navi romane di Nemi), rejecting the commonly accepted fault of the German troops and providing evidence that the fire could have been caused by accident by the American artillery. The importance of a cross and multidisciplinary reading of the testimonies on the Ships and the Nemi Museum is underlighted by the contributions of Filippo Perfetti on the film Lo specchio di Diana by Yervant Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi (1996), with a reedition of the interview with the filmmakers by Bruno Fornara, and by the contribution by Ilaria Grippa and Christian Toson “Le navi romane si possono vedere anche in tre” on the sequence set at Nemi in the film L'assassino by Elio Petri (1961). Giovanni Pietrangeli e Paola Redemagni provide a detailed description of the archival documents regarding the excavations of the ships and the company Riva Calzoni led by Guido Ucelli, preserved in the Museum of Science and Technology in Milan (Dallo scavo all’archivio. Le carte sulle Navi di Nemi negli archivi del Museo Nazionale Scienza e Tecnologia). An updated bibliography curated by Agostina Incutti and Christian Toson (Bibliografia aggiornata sulle navi di Nemi, il Museo delle navi romane e il territorio nemorense) ends the first section about the Nemi ships. The second section comprises an overview of the researches in Engramma about War, Architecture, Archaeology and Memory (numeri monografici e contributi su Guerra e Memoria pubblicati in Engramma), a contribution by Ludovico Rebaudo reconstructing the topography of an ancient Roman site discovered during World War I near Gorgo island in Grado (Anfore romane fra gli idrovolanti. Archeologia di guerra sull’isola Gorgo (luglio-agosto 1917)), and ends with L’architettura di Auschwitz, an essay by Guido Morpurgo that, by describing the architecture of the Auschwitz II – Birkenau extermination camp, reflects on the reponsibilty of the designer.

Archimedes is held in high esteem by mathematicians, physicists and engineers as one of the most brilliant scientists of all time. These proceedings contain original, unpublished papers with the primary emphasis on the scientific work of Archimedes and his influence on the fields of mathematics, science, and engineering. There are also papers dealing with archaeological aspects and the myths and legends about Archimedes and about the Archimedes Palimpsest. Papers on the following subjects form part of the book: Hydrostatics (buoyancy, fluid pressure and density, stability of floating bodies); Mechanics (levers, pulleys, centers of gravity, laws of equilibrium); Pycnometry (measurement of volume and density); Integral Calculus (Archimedes as the father of the integral calculus, method of exhaustion, approximation of pi, determination of areas and volumes); Mathematical Physics (Archimedes as the father of mathematical physics, Law of the Lever, Law of Buoyancy, Axiomatization of Physics); History of Mathematics and Mechanics (Archimedes’ influence in antiquity, the middle ages, the Renaissance, and modern times; his influence on Leonado da Vinci, Galileo, Newton, and other giants of science and mathematics); Ancient Machines and Mechanisms (catapults, water screws, iron hands, compound pulleys, planetaria, water clocks, celestial globes, the Antikythera Mechanism); Archimedean Solids (their rediscovery in the Rennaisance and their applications in materials science and chemistry); Archimedean Legends (how stories of golden crowns, eureka moments, naked runs, burning mirrors, steam cannons, etc., have influenced us through the ages, whether true or not); The Cattle Problem (how its 18th century rediscovery inspired the study of equations with integer solutions); Teaching the Ideas of Archimedes (how his life and works have influenced the teaching of science, mathematics, and engineering).

Plague and Pleasure is a lively popular history that introduces a new hypothesis about the impetus behind the cultural change in Renaissance Italy. The Renaissance coincided with a period of chronic, constantly recurring plague, unremitting warfare and pervasive insecurity. Consequently, people felt a need for mental escape to alternative, idealized realities, distant in time or space from the unendurable present but made vivid to the imagination through literature, art, and spectacle.

Inventaire Bibliographique Des Isiaca Ibis Volume 4 R Z written by J. Leclant and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-09-07 with History categories.

This fourth volume of IBIS completes the first series of this analytical bibliography of publications concerning the spread of cults of Isis published between 1940 and 1969 (nos. 1167 to 1752). Authors have sometimes been driven to look beyond the limits of the Greco-Roman world and the field of the Isiac cults stricto sensu. Such is the case with Egyptian or Egyptisizing documents carried by Greek or Phonecian-Punic commerce towards the distant western coasts of the Mediterranean basin. The Egyptophile tradition in our European culture seems to have taken its place here too. Each of the literature reviews given here is accompanied by very precise bibliographical references for the publications concerned, as well as a detailed analysis of the contents of the publication and its contribution to the general themes of research. The authors have aimed to provide the most complete and practical research tool possible. Furthermore, a number of cross-references and additional bibliographical information have been provided in the notes. A detailed index of more than 150 pages allows not only a rapid consultation of the work, but also fairly direct access to complete bibliographies on the cults of Isis, the Aegyptiaca and Egyptian influences in the Greco-Roman world.
