Rajkumar l'indomptable, Dolly, mais aussi Saya John, le vieux patriarche, Uma, la rebelle, Arjun, Alison et Dinu, les tourmentés, sont les héros vibrants d'humanité de cette fresque foisonnante, dont les vies portées par un souffle épique tissent sur trois générations, jusqu'à nos jours, tout un pan fascinant de l'histoire d'un sous-continent encore trop mal connu.

Débutant en 1885 avec la conquête de Mandalay par les Britanniques, s'achevant en 1996 avec Aung San Suu Kyi, symbole de la résistance démocratique, Le Palais des Miroirs se déroule essentiellement en Birmanie, Inde et Malaisie, et baigne dans l'histoire de l'Asie du Sud-Est - renforcement de l'Empire britannique, allées et venues des immigrés indiens, invasion japonaise de 1941 provoquant leur exode massif, lutte pour l'indépendance de l'Inde et déclin irrésistible de la Birmanie jadis " pays doré ". Mais Le Palais des Miroirs est surtout une riche et prodigieuse saga qui relate les heurts et malheurs d'une famille " élargie " ou plutôt de deux familles - l'une indienne et l'autre indo-birmane - dont les destins s'imbriquent étroitement. Le point de départ : Rajkumar et Dolly. En 1885, Rajkumar, un orphelin bengali de 11 ans, assiste à la prise de Mandalay par les Britanniques, au pillage du Palais des Miroirs, et au départ en exil des derniers souverains birmans. Il entrevoit alors, dans la suite royale, une ravissante fillette de 10 ans, Dolly, qu'il n'oubliera plus. Avec l'aide d'un marchand chinois de Malaisie, Saya John, conscient de son dynamisme et de son ambition, Rajkumar va peu à peu faire fortune, d'abord dans le commerce du teck en Birmanie, puis du caoutchouc en Malaisie, et tel un Gatsby ou un Rhett Butler, se forger une nouvelle identité. Devenu riche, il part chercher Dolly à Ratnagiri, près de Bombay, où les souverains birmans sont exilés, l'épouse et la ramène à Rangoon. Le récit se poursuit avec maints épisodes concernant les générations suivantes : enfants et petits-enfants de Rajkumar et Dolly, mais aussi d'autres membres de cette famille élargie aux destins glorieux, tourmentés et tragiques. Le roman s'achève sur les retrouvailles à Rangoon, en 1996, du second fils de Rajkumar, Dinu, photographe de 82 ans dans son studio baptisé " Palais des Miroirs ", et de la petite-fille de Rajkumar, Jaya, venue de Calcutta renouer avec un passé à la fois révolu et toujours présent.
