Per quanto riguarda le parabole di Gesù, il nostro principale interesse si è concentrato sui Sinottici, visto che il sostantivo greco parabolē, nelle varie forme, si trova nei vangeli di Matteo, Marco e Luca e in due passi dell'epistola agli Ebrei. Le occorrenze di questo termine sono 48, 46 delle quali nei sopraindicati vangeli e due nella lettera agli Ebrei. C'è poi un altro termine, che è un sinonimo di parabolē, cioè paroimia, il cui significato è proverbio, discorso figurato, parabola, discorso enigmatico. Esso si trova tre volte nel vangelo di Giovanni e una volta nella seconda epistola di Pietro. Nel vangelo di Giovanni i traduttori l'hanno reso similitudine, mentre in 2Pietro l'hanno tradotto proverbio. Le parabole di Gesù facevano parte integrante della Sua predicazione, e, per mezzo del parlare parabolico, Egli illustrava e proclamava il regno di Dio. Che questo modo di parlare non fosse sempre compreso dagli ascoltatori lo rileviamo dall'intervento dei discepoli del Cristo, quando Gliene chiesero la spiegazione:Allora Gesù, lasciate le folle, tornò a casa; e i suoi discepoli gli si avvicinarono, dicendo: spiegaci la parabola delle zizzanie nel campo (Matteo 13: 36).Pietro allora gli disse: spiegaci la parabola (Matteo 15:15).Questo però non vuol dire che il parlare parabolico di Gesù non venisse compreso dagli ascoltatori. A sostegno di questa nostra affermazione abbiamo quello che ci hanno tramandato Matteo e Marco, i quali precisano:I capi dei sacerdoti e i farisei, udite le sue parabole, capirono che parlava di loro (Matteo 21:45);Essi cercavano di prenderlo, ma ebbero paura della folla; perché capirono che egli aveva detto quella parabola per loro. E, lasciatolo, se ne andarono (Marco 12:12).Nell'affrontare il problema interpretativo delle parabole di Gesù, bisogna evitare quelle spiritualizzazioni spinte, cioè che si soffermano su tutti i dettagli della parabola, dando loro dei significati precisi. Questo tipo di interpretazione non è sempre coerente con il contesto della parabola, per non dire che spesso se ne allontana, oppure ignora l'insegnamento o gli insegnamenti che Gesù voleva trasmettere agli ascoltatori per mezzo del Suo discorso parabolico. Ogni parabola che raccontò Gesù mirava a illustrare delle verità: alcune riguardavano la vita presente e altre contemplavano il tempo escatologico, cioè quello futuro. L'interprete, nelle spiegazioni che fornirà, dovrà cercare di capire queste verità e tenerle in debito conto. Inoltre, una spiegazione che non si attenga a questa linea interpretativa potrebbe risultare deviante e insegnare una verità diversa, cui Gesù non voleva alludere. Quando ci si accosta alle parabole di Gesù, la prima cosa che bisogna fare è cercare di capire le verità centrali cui Egli ha voluto riferirsi. Se queste verità appariranno chiare davanti a noi, tutto il contorno parabolico, cioè i vari elementi della parabola, serviranno ad ampliare il nostro orizzonte su quelle verità.
