Depuis le début de l'histoire des relations franco-japonaises, les représentations des Japonais à propos de la France et des Français n'ont jamais été négatives. On peut même les considérer comme favorables. Cependant, cette francophilie n'est pas synonyme de désir de rapprochement : on se satisfait d'admirer la France de loin, comme à travers une vitre. Pour les étudiants japonais qui s'initient au français aujourd'hui et qui sont les dignes héritiers de cette francophilie paradoxale, la langue française est plus un outil de distinction sociale dans leur propre pays qu'un moyen d'entrer en contact avec des francophones. Mais l'enseignement du français contribue-t-il à faire disparaître la paroi de verre que les étudiants dressent entre eux et la culture cible ? Et d'ailleurs, les enseignants des langues étrangères ne semblent-ils pas tiraillés, de nos jours, entre leur conscience de l'importance à accorder à la dimension culturelle dans leur enseignement et l'absence de consensus quant à sa définition ? A travers l'observation de l'évolution des représentations chez des étudiants japonais et l'analyse d'entretiens avec leurs professeurs, cette étude met au jour l'influence des représentations personnelles des enseignants sur celles des apprenants. La réflexion se porte alors sur le rôle de l'enseignant dans la dimension culturelle et sur la question : faut-il aller au-delà de la francophilie paradoxale ?

Cet ouvrage regroupe les textes présentés lors du colloque international « Grandes » et « petites » langues et didactique du plurilinguisme et du pluriculturalisme. Modèles et expériences qui s'est tenu à Paris, en juillet 2006 dans les locaux de la Sorbonne, à l'initiative de l'Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales (INALCO). Il s'agissait de mobiliser internationalement les acteurs concernés par une réflexion sur une didactique du plurilinguisme et du pluriculturalisme en construction en Europe. En se donnant pour objet d'identifier les modèles didactiques et leur circulation d'une langue à l'autre, ces travaux interrogent, chacun selon l'angle spécifique de son terrain, de son contexte ou des pratiques analysées, ce que le sens commun désigne par « grandes » et « petites » langues. This collection of essays and reflections starts from an analysis of the purposes of foreign language teaching and argues that this should include educational objectives which are ultimately similar to those of education for citizenship. It does so by a journey through reflections on what is possible and desirable in the classroom and how language teaching has a specific role in education systems which have long had, and often still have, the purpose of encouraging young people to identify with the nation-state. Foreign language education can break through this framework to introduce a critical internationalism. In a ‘globalised’ and ‘internationalised’ world, the importance of identification with people beyond the national borders is crucial. Combined with education for citizenship, foreign language education can offer an education for ‘intercultural citizenship’.
