Actuellement président du Congrès juif mondial, il a représenté les intérêts du peuple juif dans toutes les circonstances de sa tragique histoire moderne. Au fil des pages du Paradoxe juif, défilent des interlocuteurs qui s'appellent Mussolini, Ciano, Louis Barthou, Roosevelt, Harry Truman, David Ben Gourion, Konrad Adenauer, Willy Brandt, Henry Kissinger, Léopold Senghor, Hassan II, etc. Goebbels lui-même se rappela au souvenir de l'auteur, mais ce fut pour l'accuser de haute trahison et le dénaturaliser. Au demeurant, Nahum Goldmann ne se veut pas seulement chroniqueur. Non conformiste dans l'âme, il ne s'aligne pas souvent sur les positions officielles d'Israël, et ce livre de brillants souvenirs est aussi un essai de réflexion politique, courageux, voire audacieux, sur des problèmes aussi brûlants que la situation des juifs en U.R.S.S. ou le conflit du Proche-Orient. Dans un domaine où la prudence diplomatique masque trop souvent une certaine hypocrisie, un homme libre parle en toute liberté. Le Paradoxe juif n'a pas fini de susciter des commentaires...

The thrust of my argument is simple: All of us think that our religion is "good" and that those in apparent (and often politically motivated) opposition to it are "bad." But the real truth is that all of our religions are equally guilty of being used to promote violence, and-thanks to centuries of political manipulation that have distorted the way we read our holy books-all of us are equally guilty of not following what our religions really say. . . . The later chapters of this book explore belief and human nature in a new light to explain how Freud's theories of the subconscious and quantum physics' model of the subatomic universe offer some of the best proof we have that God exists; show us a way to restore religion to its rightful role in our lives and our world; and conclude that we're all a lot closer to where we should be than we think.
