En moyenne, le patrimoine des Français représente à peu près quatre fois leur revenu annuel. Mais, à revenu donné, il existe cependant de grandes différences dans les patrimoines possédés. Ces différences tiennent, certes, à la capacité et à la volonté d'épargner, mais aussi à une gestion plus ou moins avisée. Au cours de la grande période de croissance du second après-guerre, la gestion des patrimoines était simple : en raison du rythme d'inflation, il suffisait de s'endetter au moindre coût, et d'acheter son logement ou des immeubles. On gagnait alors sur les deux tableaux : la dette fondait, cependant que les biens immobiliers faisaient régulièrement apparaître des plus-values. Aujourd'hui, les choses sont devenues plus compliquées : les valeurs mobilières sont maintenant présentes dans beaucoup de patrimoines mais, on l'a vu récemment, toutes comportent un risque plus ou moins grand, qu'il faut apprendre à apprécier et à maîtriser. La gestion des différents types d'endettement devient elle-même complexe. Au moment où l'épargne des particuliers a plutôt tendance à baisser, il faut de solides connaissances pour faire progresser son patrimoine, et le transmettre dans de bonnes conditions. Ce sont ces connaissances générales que voudrait fournir cet ouvrage, dans une présentation qui se tient à égale distance des théories non vérifiées, et des "recettes de cuisine" décevantes.

This book explores the objects, means and ends of international cultural heritage protection. It starts from a broad conception of cultural heritage that encompasses both tangible property, such as museum objects or buildings, and intangible heritage, such as languages and traditions.
