The landscapes of the Middle East have captured our imaginations throughout history. Images of endless golden dunes, camel caravans, isolated desert oases, and rivers lined with palm trees have often framed written and visual representations of the region. Embedded in these portrayals is the common belief that the environment, in most places, has been deforested and desertified by centuries of misuse. It is precisely such orientalist environmental imaginaries, increasingly undermined by contemporary ecological data, that the eleven authors in this volume question. This is the first volume to critically examine culturally constructed views of the environmental history of the Middle East and suggest that they have often benefitted elites at the expense of the ecologies and the peoples of the region. The contributors expose many of the questionable policies and practices born of these environmental imaginaries and related histories that have been utilized in the region since the colonial period. They further reveal how power, in the form of development programs, notions of nationalism, and hydrological maps, for instance, relates to environmental knowledge production.

Le présent ouvrage est une lecture du monde oasien et de ses dynamiques, à travers la question de l’eau (mise en valeur, adduction, partage, transaction et conflits), dans le Sahara algérien. C’est dans cette région que subsiste encore le fameux système des foggaras (s’apparentant aux qanâts iraniens) qui, depuis plusieurs siècles, permet aux ksour, ces établissements humains de la région, d’exister. Certains ksour, aujourd’hui encore, ne doivent leur survie qu’à ce mode d’adduction et d’irrigation si originale. Pierre angulaire de l’économie oasienne, le système des foggaras fonde également la structuration de la société, ses représentations et ses hiérarchisations. Les quelques travaux ayant étudié ce mode d’adduction, ont souvent privilégié le point de vue géographique, hydraulique et plus rarement sociologique. Ici, la perspective se veut résolument anthropologique, interrogeant à la fois la culture matérielle, les dimensions culturelles et l’univers symbolique. Aujourd'hui, le système des foggaras est de plus en plus chahuté par les nouveaux modes de vie et de consommation. L’urbanisation et la mise en valeurs de nouvelles terres agricoles a fini par désaffecter les palmeraies et entamer la déstructuration de l’ancien ordre social. De nouvelles réorganisations se mettent en place, selon de nouvelles modalités. Ce travail se veut à la fois une sauvegarde patrimoniale et une lecture anthropo-historique d’un présent en pleine mutation. À PROPOS DE L'AUTEUR Abderrahmane Moussaoui a enseigné à l’université d’Oran avant de rejoindre, en 2000, le département d’anthropologie de l’université de Provence qu’il a dirigé de 2005 à 2007. Depuis 2012, il est professeur en anthropologie à l’UFR d’anthropologie de sociologie et de science politique à Lyon 2. Le sacré et la sainteté aussi bien en Islam que dans le catholicisme sont parmi ses thèmes de recherche privilégiés.

The study of modern human origin, variation and behaviour focused mainly on two distinct periods: the oxygen isotopic stages OIS 6 and 5e with the oldest anatomically modern human remains from Africa and the Middle East and the oxygen isotopic stages 2 and 1 with the expansion of modern humans all over the world. Currently, genetic studies agree to consider that extant human populations reflect only a restricted part of past modern human diversity. One of the key periods to try to understand the complex evolution of Homo sapiens is the oxygen isotopic stage 3. However, few complete human remains are known for this period which limits the knowledge of the Upper Pleistocene modern human variation.
