The blending of people and living machines is a central element in the futurist "reconstruction of the universe." However, prior to the futurist break, a group of early-twentieth-century poets, later dubbed crepuscolari (crepusculars), had already begun an attack against the dominant cultural system, using their poetry as the locus in which useless little objects clashed with the traditional poetry of human greatness and stylistic perfection. The Quiet Avant-Garde draws from a number of twenty-first-century theories - vital materialism, object-oriented ontology, and environmental humanities - as well as Bruno Latour's criticism of modernity to illustrate how the crepuscular movement sabotaged the modern mindset and launched the counter-discourse of the Italian avant-garde by blurring the line dividing people from "things." This liminal poetics, at the crossroad of tradition, modernism, and the avant-garde, acted as the initiator of the ethical and environmental transition from a universe subjected to humans to human-thing co-agency. This book proposes a contemporary reading of Italian twentieth-century movements and offers a foothold for scholars outside Italian studies to access authors who are still unexplored in North American literature.

Through a series of original analyses of experimental works that exist well outside of the established territory inhabited by the Italian literary canon, or which purposely position themselves at its margins, this volume proposes a new way to understand the goals of literary experimentation as a means to break the canon and give literature the same freedom that is easily granted to other arts. This serves to allow literature itself to intersect with those other art forms, while enhancing the powerful and positive outcomes of literary experimentation. Specifically, the volume explores a series of 20th- and 21st-century Italian works that are characterized by a non-normative approach to language or the act of writing itself. The contributors, while addressing diverse writers, and often even adopting different theoretical interpretations of experimentalism itself, all analyze the intersection between experimental literatures and other art forms, as well as cross-disciplinary and non-traditional approaches to the theme of experimentation.

Coniugando la discussione critico-teorica sull’allegoria moderna e sul dibattito italiano degli anni ’80 a puntuali analisi testuali, lo studio attraversa la produzione in prosa di autori di area sperimentale e neoavanguardistica, tra cui Manganelli, Morselli, Volponi, Malerba, Arbasino, Sanguineti e Di Marco. Nelle opere esaminate la tensione allegorica si esplica non solo nel piano tematico, ma si traduce nel modo di formare, orientando le scelte diegetiche, le strutture, i rapporti con generi e modelli della tradizione. Si dispiega, così, quella tramadisegnata dall’allegoria, principio strutturante dell’opera e garante del suo rapporto con il piano della storia – di cui la letteratura, con deformato realismo, esibisce conflitti e tensioni.

Il carteggio tra Cristina e sua figlia Caterina rappresenta un caso unico nel panorama epistolare conservato in casa Medici, per l’ampiezza, per la varietà dei temi trattati, per il tono intimo e confidenziale che traspare dalle lettere. Nei dieci anni trascorsi a Mantova da Caterina le due donne si scambiarono consigli, raccomandazioni e timori che ci permettono di seguire e delineare lo scenario più ampio in cui si muovevano entrambe. Con questa edizione abbiamo ricreato l’unità di un fitto scambio epistolare, costituitosi come unicum nella volontà della scrivente, ma separato poi in due nuclei distinti nelle vicende della sua trasmissione. Sono qui pubblicate le lettere inviate dalla granduchessa Cristina di Lorena alla figlia Caterina de’ Medici Gonzaga presenti nella filza 6110 del fondo Mediceo del Principato conservato nell’Archivio di Stato di Firenze e nelle buste 1095, 1096 e 1097 dell’Archivio Gonzaga presso l’Archivio di Stato di Mantova.
