Thomas Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924) was the twentyeighth President of the United States. A devout Presbyterian and leading intellectual of the Progressive Era, he served as president of Princeton University then became the reform governor of New Jersey in 1910. With Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft dividing the Republican vote, Wilson was elected President as a Democrat in 1912. He proved highly successful in leading a Democratic Congress to pass major legislation including the Federal Trade Commission, the Clayton Antitrust Act, the Underwood Tariff, the Federal Farm Loan Act and most notably the Federal Reserve System. Wilson's idealistic internationalism, whereby the U. S. enters the world arena to fight for democracy, progressiveness, and liberalism, has been a highly controversial position in American foreign policy, serving as a model for "idealists" to emulate or "realists" to reject for the following century. His works include: When a Man Comes to Himself (1910), The New Freedom (1913), On Being Human (1916), President Wilson's Addresses (1917), State of the Union (1918) and Why We Are at War (1918).

Woodrow Wilson's presidency marked a seminal period in American history. Wilson's progressive reforms laid the foundation for FDR's New Deal and ushered the nation into its modern era. In foreign policy, his philosophy and the programs he implemented have influenced the United States' relationship with the rest of the world throughout the 20th-century. An extremely controversial president in his time, Wilson has grown in stature in the intervening years, though some remain critical of the direction in which he steered the United States. Complementing the 69-volume ^IPapers of Woodrow Wilson^R, this book provides a comprehensive guide to the secondary literature on Wilson. The complexity of Wilson's personality and the intricacies of his thought have become evident with the publication of each volume of his papers, compelling scholars to reassess the often polemical portrayals of his presidency. This bibliography provides access to the literature on one of the most fascinating individuals to occupy the White House.

First he was known as Tommy, then Woodrow, and eventually, Mr. President. Born on December 28, 1856, in Staunton, Virginia, Thomas Woodrow Wilson was a born leader. He was the president of Princeton University, served as governor of New Jersey after that, and was then elected president of the United States. But not everything was so easy for Wilson. He was ahead of his time in wanting a League of Nations after World War I to help prevent another war like it, but his hopes were dashed when the United States refused to join. Margaret Frith offers a fascinating look at how this magnificent and tragic figure handled debilitating illness, heartbreak, and "the war to end all wars."

This is a selection of the public communications of President Wilson to the American people. First come the public expositions of the President's policy, in his first inaugural address, some of his annual messages, and the numerous addresses to Congress which have been a feature of the administration. No President between John Adams and Wilson approached Congress in any other way than through the written messages sent by a subordinate, which were begun by President Thomas Jefferson. Some very characteristic short pieces in this volume are the letters and telegrams, sent on various occasions, such as the dedication of Cleveland's birthplace, the seventieth birthday of Edison, and greetings to the French and Russian governments.
