Prince Rogers Nelson dit Prince, né le 7 juin 1958 à Minneapolis (Minnesota) et mort le 21 avril 2016 à Chanhassen, dans le même État, est un compositeur-interprète, multi-instrumentiste, réalisateur artistique et producteur américain de pop, de funk, de rock et de RnB contemporain. Il est également danseur et acteur. Sa carrière, qui a démarré en 1978, est l'une des plus denses dans l'univers de la pop, avec plus de trente recueils studio parus en moins de quarante ans. Il faut y ajouter de nombreux albums et chansons façonnés pour les Bangles, Sheena Easton, Chaka Khan, Patti LaBelle, Madonna, Sheila E., Mavis Staples ou The Time. Son plus gros succès commercial est la bande originale du film Purple Rain (dans lequel il joue le rôle-titre), publiée en 1984 et vendu à vingt millions d'exemplaires. Il est également l'auteur de Sign "☮" the Times, des chansons du Batman de Tim Burton, des tubes Little Red Corvette, When Doves Cry, Kiss, Cream ou encore Sexy M.F. Le morceau phare de Sinéad O'Connor, Nothing Compares 2 U, est par ailleurs une composition de Prince. Multi-instrumentiste – il en pratique une vingtaine, excellant notamment à la guitare, à la basse, au piano, à la batterie et aux claviers –, il s'est forgé une aura de créateur ambitieux, éclectique et une réputation scénique hors pair, en affectionnant en concert les danses et les solos. Il est aussi connu pour la nature pornographique de beaucoup de ses chansons, comme pour l'usage de costumes excentriques. En 1993, il abandonne son nom de scène au profit de l'imprononçable pictogramme « Love Symbol », afin de contester le contrat qui le lie à la maison de disques Warner Bros. Il en est partiellement libéré en 1996, puis totalement en 2000, et reprend alors son pseudonyme d'origine. Il signe un nouvel accord avec la firme en 2014, qui lui permet, en principe, de devenir propriétaire de ses enregistrements Warner, l'un des motifs du conflit. Il est l'un des premiers à expérimenter la diffusion de la musique par Internet avant de s'en distancier. La musique vocale, qui se développe dans les cours italiennes de la seconde moitié du XVIe siècle, n'est pas seulement une mise en scène et une mise en son du pouvoir. Si le prince (ou la République, dans le cas de Venise) sait utiliser avec profit le spectacle musical et ses discours d'escorte (descriptions de fêtes, préfaces et dédicaces des oeuvres) pour dire sa gloire, la musique ne se limite pas à représenter le pouvoir. Ainsi, en étudiant les rapports qui unissent l'art vocal au mode de gouvernement et, plus généralement, à l'organisation politique des sociétés dans quatre principautés de l'Italie septentrionale de la fin du XVIe siècle (Florence, Ferrare, Mantoue et Venise), il apparaît que la musique - c'est-à-dire à la fois sa pratique et les discours qui sont tenus sur elle - est utilisée comme un instrument politique dont l'efficacité est mesurable et qu'elle est considérée par les hommes du Cinquecento comme un langage nécessaire pour décrire et expliquer le fonctionnement politique des Etats. Une fois mise en évidence l'hégémonie de la musique dans les principautés, la confrontation de sources aussi différentes que des comptes-rendus de spectacles, des dédicaces de partitions, des traités de théorie musicale, mais aussi des traités de théorie politique et des chroniques de villes, permet de considérer la façon dont l'art vocal est compris au XVIe siècle comme une forme du discours politique. Un discours qui ne se contente pas de faire savoir (la gloire du prince, sa vaillance, et de faire croire (à la nécessité de certains choix politiques vénitiens, à l'immutabilité des systèmes politiques), mais cherche surtout à faire faire : pour les hommes du Cinquecento, la musique vocale est un moyen d'agir en politique qui assure à la communauté organisée des hommes sa pérennité.
