Doyen de la géographie française et francophone, Pierre Gourou, mort au printemps 1999, aurait eu cent ans en août 2000. Son enseignement à Hanoi, à Bordeaux, à Bruxelles et au Collège de France, et surtout ses publications ont fécondé la géographie durant plus de soixante ans. Selon les termes de Fernand Braudel, " le plus entraînant des géographes français de son temps " était aussi " un des esprits les plus rares de notre temps ". Ce livre, expression d'une filiation intellectuelle et d'une fidélité, regroupe les contributions d'une quarantaine d'auteurs appartenant à trois générations. Il pose des jalons en vue de l'analyse d'une pensée plus complexe, plus vaste, mais aussi plus pragmatique et moins académique qu'on ne le croit souvent.
