Queste lettere “private”, indirizzate da Zaccagnini ai famigliari e ad alcuni amici, ci fanno ritrovare il cristiano in politica a causa della fede, in un rapporto particolarissimo con il potere. «attenzione», scrive l’arcivescovo di Modena-Nonantola Erio castellucci, «Zaccagnini non appare mai diviso tra un’obbedienza a Dio e al suo Regno (spiritualità) e una all’uomo e alla storia (impegno politico), ma le pratica assieme, avvertendole come due dimensioni dello stesso amore». Tutte le lettere qui raccolte hanno lo stesso filo conduttore: la vita è un dono, è bella, in sé è un valore incommensurabile e incomparabile; “per fortuna che si muore”, perché solo così si ha la possibilità di conoscere l’unica cosa che vale più della nostra vita: la vita nella Gerusalemme celeste, che Zaccagnini è certo di raggiungere, al massimo con una spinta. La politica? È solo uno strumento per aiutare gli altri. Non è il caso, dunque, di menare vanto per incarichi, onori e onorificenze: tutta roba effimera di cui si perde presto persino la memoria. «Assume prezioso valore», scrive il Presidente Sergio Mattarella nella sua testimonianza, «questa raccolta di scritti così personali, a volte commoventi, comunque espressivi di una umanità tanto ricca da non poter essere ricompresa soltanto nella dimensione politica». Fede, mitezza, ma uomo capace di decisioni solitarie, sottolinea guido Bodrato, mentre Pierluigi castagnetti ci ricorda che «il cuore di Benigno non si era mai inaridito, nonostante la politica». «Un cuore ricco di valori umani», insiste Aldo Preda, che ha curato diverse pubblicazioni su Zaccagnini perché il messaggio di questo cristiano prestato alla politica non vada disperso.

The Mediterranean, both a sea and a theatre, has served throughout history as a fundamental crossroads for the political-religious dynamics and international tensions that characterize the various worlds, east and west, south and north, that meet in this basin. Under the influence of early modern models of sublimity, including Spenser and Shakespeare, Milton speaks through his fictional characters about the making of heroic and literary virtue.
