Giuseppe Rensi, filosofo solitario e inattuale per eccellenza negli anni del fascismo, pubblicò nel 1937 questa «Filosofia dell’assurdo», versione riveduta e ampliata di un testo del 1924, «Interiora rerum», che egli aveva sentito «fluire dal cervello come una piccola corrente di lava». Oggi leggiamo questo libro come la formulazione più matura e in certo modo testamentaria del suo pensiero. Tutti i temi fondamentali di Rensi – e in particolare la sua polemica virulenta contro ogni forma di lettura razionalistica, provvidenzialista e tranquillizzante della storia – sono presenti in queste pagine e inanellati in una argomentazione che è insieme consequenziale ed elegantemente digressiva, secondo la tradizione del grande saggismo europeo. Quando Rensi scriveva, era totalmente isolato. Oggi i suoi pensieri si riallacciano naturalmente a quelli di molti autori, da Nietzsche a Cioran, che appartengono al paesaggio essenziale della nostra cultura. E la sua tesi di fondo suona oggi più convincente che mai: «La storia non è che lo sforzo per allontanarsi dal presente, perché questo è sempre assurdo e male; la prova dunque che è assurdo e male».

Sa dénonciation d'un monde " toujours plus obscur, torve, âpre, peu sûr, sans but, sans jugement, sans lueur " résonne aujourd'hui de façon prémonitoire.

Frammenti d'una filosofia dell'errore e del dolore, del male e della morte è l'ultimo dei sei libri in cui Rensi rompe con i consueti moduli sistematico-trattatistici dell'esposizione filosofica e adotta lo stile del pensiero breve. Questo “formato” è caratterizzato da una duttilità che esalta le grandi doti di scrittore e anche di affabulatore di Rensi. Lo vediamo così svariare da illuminanti interpretazioni di alcuni fra i “luoghi” più classici della filosofia occidentale, a penetranti “bozzetti” paranarrativi o storici che toccano le aporie della condizione umana con una sensibilità degna di Pascal o di Leopardi. I Frammenti sono una “rapsodia del negativo” che non ingenera nel lettore accasciamento, bensì quasi paradossalmente produce su di lui un effetto tonificante per via dell'intensità e della fortissima carica etica d'indignazione con cui Rensi conduce la sua requisitoria contro il male.
